Purple Dragonfly Book Awards Contest

The judges of the Purple Dragonfly Book Awards contest, which recognizes excellence in children's literature, have spoken, and Fifo "50 States" by Hayley Rose has won First Place in the Children's Picture Books Six and Older, and Second Place in the Educational/Instructional categories. We want to help parents give their children only the best in reading excellence. Geared toward stories for children between the ages of four and 10, the Purple Dragonfly Book Awards are designed to bring families together with great children's literature, and a Purple Dragonfly seal on a book's cover lets parents choose new titles for their bookshelves with confidence," explains Linda Radke, president of Five Star Publications, the sponsor of the Dragonfly Book Awards. Winning any place in the Purple Dragonfly Contest is a huge honor because in order to maintain the integrity of the Dragonfly Book Awards, a minimum score of 72 out of 80 must be earned for a 1st Place award, 64 out of 80 for a 2nd Place and 56 out of 80 for an Honorable Mention even if it is the sole entry in a category. Competition is steep, too, because there is no publication date limit as long as the book is still in print.

Fifo "50 States" is an extremely informative book for all ages. Fifo the bear takes the reader on a journey through the United States explaining a little about each state as he travels along. While the book is geared towards the younger generation, unless you know everything there is to know about each individual state, then I'm positive you will find something in this delightful book.

The book lists each state in alphabetical order and with rhyming prose Fifo teaches you the state's capital, it's flower, national tree, bird as well as, the numerical listing of each state as they joined the constitution. The pages are wonderfully illustrated with other facts drawn throughout, things like what a state is "famous" for, the export of the states industries and much more. Did you know that Kentucky was the 15th state?? South Dakota's national tree is the Black Hills Spruce or how the Mockingbird is Tennessee's state bird?? With so many interesting tidbits to share and explore, the children will enjoy talking about the things they find throughout the pages.

This is a very interesting book that my children quite enjoyed, we are Canadians and we learned so much from it. I would suggest home-school families pick a copy of this up and add it to their reference shelves, as well, school/public libraries would also benefit. I would love to see Fifo take us around the world, or to other countries and teach us more about the things we don't know and should. My children thank you Fifo for being such a wonderful tour guide, we look forward to more of your adventures.

My son is 6 and he loves this book! When we first got it, he read it out loud to me over two nights (he's a very good reader for his age). He loved the poetic writing style and then he spent time on each page looking at the pictures. It's great when a book that is so educational can draw a child's interest for such a long time. A few nights ago, he was looking on Google Earth on our computer. Then the next morning, I noticed that he had the "Fifo 50 States" book open to the North Carolina page, so he must have been curious to see the places that he was reading about. I would definitely recommend this book for any child who wants to learn more about America and also to elementary school teachers.

An adorably fun and educational book, Fifo "50 States" should be a main staple to every child's library. Fifo the bear is a huggable, fun and the perfect tour guide who will introduce your child to all 50 States of the United States. With delightfully rhyming text, each state has it's very own poem, complete with vital information such as which numerical founding state it is, the capital, the flower, tree, bird and the location in retrospect to the entire United States, that state is. On the opposite page, of the poem, is a colorful and hard-to-resist illustration depicting the poem, as well as showing the state's flag and other great things that that particular state is known for.

Fifo "50 States" is in alphabetical order, which makes looking up particular states quick and easy. Also with it's catchy, rhyming text, these facts are easy to learn and memorize. It is a proven fact that by providing a rhyme or rhythm to text, the brain is much more likely to register and remember what is being taught. A tempo type of learning mixed with associative learning makes learning so much more fun and easier. Fifo "50 States" is the perfect tool to teach children about the individual states and the importance they each hold to making the United States a whole.

Kids will adore Fifo and adults will delight in their children's delight in learning. This is truly a book that will continue to be treasured within our family.

Fifo “50 States” would be a great addition to a classroom or homeschool geography unit about the 50 states. It’s a short book told in rhyme that is easy to read. Each page features one of the states. Pictures depict some of the highlights of the state as well as showing the state flag. The rhyming text includes the state Capitol, bird, tree and more.

I read this straight through but think it would be more beneficial taken a few states at a time while studying those states. There is a lot of information packed into these pages.

It is a great educational tool to teach young kids about the states. It is cleverly rhymed and gives students the information they need in elementary school, like the capitals and state birds.

I bought this for my nephews at a local book sale. It was a great book for them to read and enjoy. The colorful pictures helped with their understanding of what Fifo was doing. While I was there a lady came over to me and asked if I was going to be getting the book. I replied yes, and she grabbed the book from me. She opened it up and said," I am the author what are your nephews names?

My precocious 8-year-old daughter still likes "picture books" but at the same time is a sponge for facts. Fifo 50 States is the best of both! Visually stimulating illustrations keep her interested while the geography sinks in. Great for reading before bed time or fun reference book for geographical facts.
