Two Zine-Style cookbooks in one!,

I love this cookbook. It's my favorite vegan cookbook in my collection. The food is simple and uses a lot of readily-available ingridients. That and everything I've made from the cookbook is amazing. My favorite thing so far is biscuits and easy gravy from the Hot Damn and Hell Yeah! side of the book. But then, I'm a sucker for carbohydrate-loaded lumps of awesome smothered with salty, fattening goodness. This is DEFINATELY worth the price. I'd reccomend it to all of my vegan comrades, new and old alike. Besides, what's not to love about southern-style vegan food?

Not really a vegan cookbook,

This is yet another omnivore cookbook filled with omnivore recipes with the words "egg replacer" put in for "eggs," "soy milk" put in for "milk," "margarine" put in for "butter," etc. In some recipes, the authors got lazy and simply said eggs, etc. I can pick up any omnivore cookbook and do this sort of substitution myself. Also, one recipe calls for honey, which is an animal product. Agave nectar or another sweetener would have worked just as well.

Like another commenter said, there a lot of typos and bad formatting in this book that make the recipes unclear. Also, it seems like quite a few recipes were added just to fill up pages, like the pizza dough recipe for making enough dough for 30 pizzas (the author worked at a pizzeria). While I loved that there were Ethiopian recipes included, they really had nothing to do with the theme of the book and were just stuck in there to take up space.Good recipes, but very disorganized.

Good basic vegan cookbook with split personalities,

The first half of this book -- the "Hot Damn & Hell Yeah" part -- is written entirely in southern twang (along the vein of "cook fer 10 minutes, all the while stirrin' the pot ter make sure it doesn't stick ter the bottom"). Despite being slightly difficult to read, it's kind of fun. I always enjoy using this cookbook; most of the recipes are easy to follow, contain ingredients you already have in your kitchen, and taste delicious. There are a variety of recipes: gravy, TVP chili, Spanish rice, herbed couscous, cornbread, sweet potato pie, etc.The second 'zine-style half is pretty useless, though, because there aren't enough directions. There are a few recipes that sound great but that I have never been able to make, as this half doesn't tell you what is what or even how to combine some of the odd recipes to make a complete dinner. There are certainly more gourmet cookbooks out there, but this is a nice little one to have in your collection.

This book is rampant with gramatical and typographical errors. For example, on page 42 there are two errors alone. The gramatical errors are forgiveable, but when the recipe calls for "1/4" of something, you are sometimes left to wonder if that 1/4 is a teaspoon, cup, gallon, who knows. On a positive note, there is at least a wide variety of recipes.

there are really two books here and it was a disservice to put them togeather. ppl are right. the one is horrible, not really southern recipies, typos and glaring errors. however the other book inside is wonderful. it tells you what to use as replacements for eggs and milk and such. for example alot of vegan websites and books will tell you to get "egg replacers" but not tell you what those are, this book gives you several replaces and how much of each to use, such as how much silken tofu equals one egg, so you can "veganize" other recipies in regular cook books. from the one side, Hot Damn And Hell Yeah, all the recipies have turned out great and are good tasting. the other side is just crap, nothing has turned out right and for an example "seitan dirty rice" in the ingrediant list it just says "2 cups" of what you have to guess. so buy it cheap cuz your only gonna use half of it.

2 in 1 - ONE being much better than TWO,

This is actually two cooking zines in one binding. HDaHY is the best of the two - we use Ryan Splint's biscuit recipe and brownie recipe all the time. This is good basic grub. Love the illustrations, too. The Dirty South side wasn't as well edited - there are mistakes and missing bits here and there. Plus, the food just doesn't really "work" for me as much. Frankly - I suggest you by it for the Hot Damn side, but if you're a long-standing vegan looking for "something new" - this one isn't for you, probably.

The typos, grammatical errors and vague measurements are a bit annoying, however being that I am an experienced vegan cook, I don't really follow many measurements anyway. It serves as a good base to yummy, simple not to mention kid friendly recipes (nothing too fancy in here!). I enjoyed it and every recipe I have tried out of it has come out very tasty (the mac n cheez, chocolate cake and apple pie are all awesome).

This irreverent cookbook is full of fun stuff and good recipes that are sure to keep your vegan kitchen cooking.Despite the previous reviewer's complaint about the book's editing, it would be hard to take away from its overwhelming value in the kitchen.

Some so-so, some AWESOME!,

This review is from: Hot Damn and Hell Yeah! Recipies for Hungry Banditos and the Dirty South Vegan Cookbook (Paperback)
I bought this cookbook on a whim, and while I agree that some recipes seem to be just filler, some are so awesome it excuses that for me. And really, I've paid more for lengthy cookbooks whose recipes only end up being "okay" to me, that never have an awesome, go-to recipe that I reach for. (In fact, I have a rule. After trying ten recipes from the book and having none of them be great, I get rid of it.) While I admittedly haven't tried all the recipes in this book, the two that I've tried ROCK.First, the enchiladas. My brother and I grew up judging enchiladas by their resemblance to the frozen entrees we used to eat when we were little. (Pre-vegan, of course, and don't knock them! We both remember them being pretty tasty!) I made these when a friend was visiting, then, so impressed with them, again when my brother (not vegan) came over one night. He seconded my opinion of their awesome-ness and has requested them again the next time he comes over. Second, the fried tofu. It's the original country-style, and incredible. Horribly greasy, so only good once in a while, but completely tasty and worth a splurge. I would honestly recommend this cookbook, even though these are the only two recipes I have tried yet. They're worth it! |
