Book Description

On Friday the 13th of January 2012, an admittedly bad omen in terms of dates, the modern cruise liner Costa Concordia began sinking off the Italian port town of Isola del Giglio, Tuscany after striking a reef off the Italian coast. The reef ripped a massive gash in the ship’s hull, flooded, and capsized the cruise ship in a matter of hours. For over four thousand individuals, what began as the holiday of a lifetime quickly turned into a night of sheer panic and terror, and sadly for some, the final night of their lives. (Updated June 2012 with more first person accounts and optimized for a better reading experience on non-color as well as color Kindles.)

Many have asked how, given the state-of-the-art navigation systems present on modern cruise liners, such an accident could possibly take place. In this engrossing Kindle e-book, best-selling technology author Edward C. jones gives you a detailed look at the first-hand accounts, the chaotic confusion that followed the collision, the mixed signals from the captain and crew, the navigational blunders, the accusations of ineptitude and cowardice, and the tales of heroism that together encompassed this major maritime disaster of the 21st century. Included in this gripping tale is a copy of the now infamous transcript between Capt. Schettino and the Italian Coast Guard Commander DeFalco; riveting statements by members of the dining staff who were asked to serve the captain and a guest as the ship was taking on water; and first-person accounts from passengers who thought that the night would be their last.

2.0 out of 5 stars In case you missed it in the news. June 18, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Instead of this book, I recommend "Fatal Voyage, The Wrecking of the Costa Concordia," ... Written by journalist John Hooper. It's much better written and gives more detail. I've read both of them.

"The Costa Concordia Disaster: A Tragedy of Titanic Proportions" by Edward Jones, the original title is now listed as "Reckless Abandon?" This book seems to have been written more by a reporter than by an author. It is a chronicle of news articles and photos taken directly from news sources (internet; newspapers; etc.). There are no individual tales of survival/tragedy from any passenger's point of view. There is a definite villain but no specific hero. On my kindle ereader, there were approx 9 to 10 blank pages under the heading Timeline of Events and about 5 blank pages under a chart of cruise ship trends. They just don't show up at all. On my android, I did see these pages but they really are just repetitive info from the text. On my android the photos were in color and there were some nice pictures of the Costa Concordia "before" taken from ship brochures and a few good "after" photos that were collected from various news sources. The text repeats itself throughout. I think this was attempt at making a quick dollar.

I purchased it because I had missed a lot when the news came out. If you just want to add to your sources of information, this might be good for you. As far as what happened to the 17 who died... who were they... what about the 17 missing... it doesn't speak to any of that. Many questions still unanswered as of the publication of this book.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good book for the money March 10, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This was an interesting book with a lot of information. It was rather short, which was understandable, since it was printed right after the disaster occurred. An interesting thing is that I just watched a show on the sinking a few months later and hardly no new information has been uncovered. It seems that the sinking was a pretty straightforward occurrence. For $1.49, you can't go wrong.

5.0 out of 5 stars Pretty good, much better than a website. November 13, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Good job, Edward Jones. This was a very informal book. The many pics helped. The big gash with boulder in the side close up was very cool, I mean, just to see what rock can do to a ship.

For those who want a quick read about the Costa Concordia disaster, this is it. It's short and to the point, giving facts and personal insights without getting long and wordy. Well worth reading.
