Book Description

September 14, 2011
David Sitton was barely a man when he left surfing and partying to live in Papua New Guinea, a faraway, perilous land. Leaving Texas with a Bible, a suitcase (and a surfboard), he took the gospel into cannibalistic areas to people who had never heard the name of Jesus. For thirty-four years God has used him to help train missionaries, spread the gospel and establish dozens of churches in remote regions. Through this book, experience the amazing things God did as David recklessly abandoned his will to the will of God.

Editorial Reviews

Review

All I have read and heard and watched inclines me to rejoice over the vision and theology and mission of David Sitton. I thank God for his Christ-exalting, God-centered, Bible-based courage to focus his life and ministry on the unreached tribal peoples. Like no one else I know, David Sitton puts his body where his mouth is. The risks are high; the reward is overwhelming. I commend To Every Tribe Ministries for your support and involvement. May the Lord of glory spread his fame through all who partner with this ministry to make a name for Jesus among the nations. --Dr. John Piper Pastor for Preaching and Vision Bethlehem Baptist Church, Minneapolis, MN

I first heard of David Sitton when he spoke at John Piper s pastor s conference in 2006. I thought, Wow, this guy is intense, which is saying something when you re at Piper s conference. I greatly respect David for his courage, his commitment to go where Christ has not been named, and his insistence on sound theology as the basis of strong missions. I look forward to reading his story of going, growing, and learning as a missionary. From what I ve already read and from what I know about David, it will be quite a story. --Kevin DeYoung Author, Pastor University Reformed Church East Lansing, Michigan

This is the kind of book I want to read. It put me in touch with Reality. I was unnerved. I was convicted. And it fueled my soul-ache for God so that when I finished I couldn t help praying, Oh, Jesus, this is how I want to know you. All I want my life to say is that you are real and you are worth it. Don t let me waste it! There are so few of these kinds of books. Read it. You will not regret it, though you may get more than you bargained for. --Jon Bloom President, Desiring God Ministries

5.0 out of 5 stars Don't Read This Book . . . March 8, 2012
. . . unless you want to be challenged, encouraged, convicted, and moved to rejoicing in a great God with great plans for his people! I can't remember how I saw this book, but I bought it on my Kindle and now I'll be buying a copy for our church library as well as a copy for a guy I know is thinking about missions as vocation. Sitton, while theologically orthodox, is probably clinically insane for the way he throws himself into the maelstrom of pioneer church planting. His Paul-like abandonment of safety and comfort for the unpredictability of risking his life to bring the gospel into tribal areas of Papua New Guinea and Mexico will blow you away and probably leave you a bit unsatisfied with your comfortable, respectable, small-God-big-Man lifestyle. I know it did that to me. Oh to live with the reckless abandon Sitton speaks of! BUY. THIS. BOOK.

5.0 out of 5 stars Refreshingly Challenging! November 14, 2011
David Sitton's personal journey into the calling that God had for his life was a joy to read about. This was one of those books that I just didn't want to put down once I started reading it. I was intrigued by the different challenges that he faced and encouraged by his faith in the God who had called and sent him. It was personally moving to reflect on the backlash experienced by those choosing Christ in cultures that are so different from what we know. It was also very eye-opening to realize how untouched with the Gospel some cultures are which are located very close to where we live. If you are open to something that will strengthen your resolve to follow God's leading and teach you more about what faith in God looks like, then this is a must-read! My life will forever be changed from observing this one man's obedience.

5.0 out of 5 stars An Inspiring Missionary Life February 26, 2013
Amazon Verified Purchase
This book is something of an autobiography, with a heavy emphasis on missions and theology. David Sitton grew up a hippy, surfing and partying on the Gulf in southern Texas, when the Lord saved him. Through a series of remarkable providences David ended up in Bible school, and eventually overseas in Papua New Guinea among the totally unreached tribes there. Much of the book details his work there, stories of trekking through miles of mud to reach a tribe, of shouting face to face with a witch doctor, of being threatened and beaten for Christ's sake. There are gospel triumphs detailed as well, men and women coming to Christ and living for Him, and after the course of many years of faithful witness, four tribal chiefs repented and believed! The picture of these men at their baptism is heart warming.

The book has lots of photos, and they add to the story, putting a face and a sight to the many names and places detailed in the book. The book also has lots of Scripture references - Sitton quotes scripture on every other page, just in the telling of his story, and cites every one. The book has lots of theological insights interspersed amongst the stories and the scripture. It is very helpful to see the theology actually lived out in the events in his life. One good example is how David taught the believing villagers regarding sickness. Rather than trying to appease God like one of their tribal spirits, he taught them to see Him as sovereign over everything, including sickness, and to rely on Him and praise Him, even though He might not choose to heal, all footnoted with Scripture references.

In all this book is stirring, enlightening, educational, and doctrinal. I highly recommend it, very much along the lines of Through Gates of Splendor or Shadow of the Almighty: The Life and Testament of Jim Elliot (Lives of Faith).
