I recently purchased this DVD set on a whim and was absolutely captivated by it. It was funny, romantic, touching, sad, suspenseful. All the actors were magnificent, especially the 3 leads. I tried to drag it out 3 nights but found I just couldn't. I finally gave in - it was like devouring a guilty pleasure in one sitting. Surfed the web and found Reckless, the Sequel, and ordered it sent 2-day priority mail. Get them both at the same time - the sequel is just as wonderful. This series reminded me what a joy good entertainment can be.

This series, first shown on Masterpiece Theatre, has everything, including romance, comedy and sex, sometimes at the same time. All of the actors are wonderful, displaying perfect comic timing. The dramatic scenes are often poignant.
The love story may be central to the plot, but the adventures of Anna and Owen touch the lives of their relatives, friends and business associates in unexpected ways. The settings range from city, to lush countryside to a working man's neighborhood and pub, to a bustling hospital. There's lots of action as well as some incredibly steamy love scenes. Reckless is a series to watch more than once. I never tire of revisiting Anna and Owen and all the other characters.

I just bought the DVD of this series and it's great! The acting and writing are excellent. Writer Paul Abbott also wrote "State of Play" --another great series on BBC America. And FYI, all of the episodes ARE included in the DVD set. The set includes 4, 2-hour DVDs (3 of the series and 1 of the sequel).

Warning! The middle part is almost completely missing!,

Dearest Robson Green fans . . . I bought this video set, and when it arrived, I made my popcorn and settled down for a long night of living vicariously through Anna Crane (Francesca Annis) and her steamy love affair with gorgeous Owen Springer (Robson Green). I got to see the first part, which I had missed while it was showing on PBS. Wonderful. Saw the previews for the second part, where the relationship really takes off, and poof! Nothing! We go straight to the last lap, where Anna decides which man she will go with, if either! I was devastated! Hoping it was merely a fluke with the video, I sent it back, and ordered another one. Hoping and wishing it was a fluke! Finally it arrived and poof! Still no middle scene! I don't know how the distributors got away with this, but wait for it to be redistributed, if it ever is. It's too disappointing not to have the whole thing! I give it 2 stars, just because Robson is so appealing.

I saw this on my local PPS station, and really enjoyed it. When I found out I could buy it, and that there was a sequel. well I ordered right away. But when I received it was disapointed, that the frist movie is missing an entire episode at the end of the second tape. The third tape starts after they are in devorce. But they never show the affair, when he gets the sports car, and the husband is trying to find out who the other man is. Dont understand why nobody has brought this up. Alot is missing. very disapointed. Sent my copies back

I really enoyed Reckless and was very excited to recieve it for a holiday gift. Like other reviewers I found that much of the middle of the story is absent from the tapes, production must have been [messed] up. I returned it twice but found the same problem each time. Such a shame.

I notice a few of the reviewers mention that part of their videos are missing. This obviously had to do with the company. I did not purchase my set (3 tapes) on line, so I have the entire film. I cannot describe how marvelous it is and how credible all of the performaces are. Michael Kitchen is a standout because he must play a part that is simply not very appealing to human sensibility, and he carries it off superbly. Bravo to all, and the age switch is credible and welcome. She is older than he is!!!I suggest to those who have already purchsed a set without the middle to purchase it from a local vendor and not on line. This is safer.

Don't Miss This One.,

This was one of the best programs ever to be broadcast on either public television (which is saying a great deal given other legendary programs like I'Claudius, Poldark, and Upstairs, Downstairs) or the networks. The story centers on the return of a brash young surgeon from London to his native Manchester to tend his alcoholic father. In connection with his return he joins the staff of a local hospital and shortly thereafter falls in love with an older woman he met on the trip from London. (...) Reckless offers everything a discerning viewer could want: romance, drama, comedy, suspense, and even farce. Casting is ideal all roles are admirably played by skilled actors who understand precisely who their characters are and what they should be doing/feeling at every given moment. Don't miss this one or it's equally superb follow-up: Reckless, the Sequel.

The cast, the story, the direction - all outstanding. This was a treat for the mind and the heart. I loved every second of it and laughed and laughed and laughed and then I ached for love that this story represents. The writing is a magnificent surprise. Surprises throughout as well. Robson Green is a deep, sexy, loving, funny and powerful screen actor. I want to see everything he's ever done. Francesca Annis is a brilliant actress and her scenes with Michael Kitchen were superb and Michael Kitchen was superb. The supporting cast was excellent with the character of Owen's Dad being a special standout. I felt as though I never wanted it to end. I bought two copies for friends and both of them watched all four tapes in one evening - I dragged it out - to experience this thrill over a few days. Four tapes - that includes the marvelous Sequel.Don't miss this. Share it. Watch it again. And have the best time.

Fun, well-acted and written MASTERPIECE soap. Great Escape!,

This is soooo entertaining. I too found myself not wanting it to end. True love is a blessing! A sense of humor helps. "Show 'em your sex aids, Colin."Also, I found myself turning my Closed Captioning on and off alot--to clarify some of Owen's dad's dialogue (not a drawback). Quite a variety of accents here, not to mention the slang. Other aspects: difficulty finding meaningful relationships, taking care of an incapacitated parent with grace and dignity, living with a retired alcoholic parent--who doesn't want you to butt into his life, maintaining a career as a "single" woman while trying to have a decent marriage, divorce and class structure as central themes. Don't want to get too deep--just watch it a time or two. It's irresistable and quite sophisticated like eating chocolate chips and pecans together--really (wouldn't joke about chocolate!). Is Owen's father related to Ray Davies? |
