Book Description

The second novel in the Secrets of the Zodiac series: Full-length historical romances, featuring sexy storylines, complex characters, and international intrigue, set against the backdrop of the Napoleonic Wars.

A seductive agent, a disillusioned lord, and a web of deceit only they can untangle...

Sophie Bertrand is skilled in acting, espionage, and the subtle art of seduction. An independent spirit, she fought her way from rough streets to the top secret circle of spies known as the Zodiac. Her newest assignment is one of her most delicate yet: hunt down a traitor within Britain's own government. But there's a catch...this time she can't work alone.

Bruce Allander has a title, honor, wealth...but he'd trade it all to restore his family. The Zodiac gives him a chance for justice in a world that's already taken too much from him. Now he finds himself close to this captivating Frenchwoman--possibly too close. Sophie defies all his expectations, yet in her he senses a kindred soul.

Passion draws the two together, but a web of betrayals threatens to tear them apart. To survive, they have to trust each other. They have to be a little reckless...

Novels in the Secrets of the Zodiac series include:
A Heartless Design
A Reckless Soul
A Shameless Angel
The Lady Dauntless

5.0 out of 5 stars A Must Read! April 3, 2014
By sheryl
Format:Kindle Edition
This is a review for author Elizabeth Cole and this is book 2 from the Secrets Of The Zodiac series.

Set back in the early 1800 Europe time period 2 spies are put together to join forces to help their organization against evil forces that threaten to cause disaster for their country. Sophie is a street wise actress/spy who does whatever it takes to get the job done. Bruce is a lord/spy who works with his servants to tend his estates land. Both knew this job could be dangerous but they did not know exactly how dangerous it would be.

I am not really into historical novels but I actually liked this book. The story line was well worth the read and the characters had depth to their them and they worked well together. There was no complicated story or no twists and turns so you did not know where you were at and that is a nice change from other spy thrillers out there.

Sophie has lots of disguises and fly's by the seat of her pants and no one really know the real Sophie. Bruce is a planner and very methodical on how he works. Bring these 2 together and you have murder, lies, betrayal and romance.

Any one who likes historical romance novels will enjoy getting and reading this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Spies I Loved to Read About April 3, 2014
By Ann
Format:Kindle Edition
A Reckless Soul is a remarkable read. It is set in the early 1800's and has all the charm and character a reader could ask for in a story. The descriptions of the time are spot on and fun to read about.

Sophie is a tough woman, used to being on her own and living by her wits. She is street wise and does what she needs to in order to succeed. She uses disguises and acts differently as the situation calls for, but no one knows the real Sophie. She also tends to jump into situations without a plan, a reckless soul.

Bruce is a Lord and is used to power, but down to earth and very smart. Both spies on the same side, but with different approaches to the end goal. Bruce is methodical and logical and the complete opposite of Sophie, but they must work together to escape danger and save themselves.

I love historical novels and this book was amazing. The story was easy to follow and the characters likable and believable. The story was interesting and the pitfalls they encounter were well thought out and well planned. I loved the underlying themes of trust and love and how the characters handled their realities.

I was gifted this book for an honest review.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Regency Spy Who Loved Me! April 7, 2014
By Myrt
Format:Kindle Edition
Post French Revolution, French actress Sophie Bertrand is a spy for the British espionage group Zodiac. Sophie is one of Zodiac's best, utilizing her acting talents, street smarts and skills at seduction to create different personas to track down information to aid the British government. James Bond would be proud. Sophie is a loner and so is not happy when she is told she will be working with a partner on her next assignment. Bruce Allender, Lord Forester is titled, wealthy and also a dedicated spy. He is also Sophie's new partner. As opposites attract, these two are a lock to become a couple. Sophie is free wheeling and likes to work in the moment, instantly adapting to every situation. Bruce is a bit stuffy and likes to carefully plan out each step. Naturally they are assigned to act as husband and wife to learn the identity of a traitorous important government official at a country estate.

Sophie and Bruce are good at what they do and it is easy to become absorbed in how they learn to respect each other's different styles and gradually trust each other as partners in espionage. Bruce in particular, has to overcome his own prejudices of Sophie's gender and social class. Being an actress at the time was not considered something a nice girl (like say Meryl Streep) would do. Plus fictional James Bond gets to sleep around with no marks on his character but it didn't work out so well for actual spy, Mata Hari. Sophie struggles more on the romance end of things as she begins to trust Bruce enough to let go of her defenses and be herself with him.

The perspective goes between Sophie and Bruce as they attempt to work together to learn the traitor's name and deal with their mutual attraction. The story has a strong spy storyline that is not just a filler for the romance.

Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Setting: England 1806
Genre: Romantic suspense

I truly enjoyed this book. Ms Cole has done a wonderful job at world-building. Forester was introduced in the first book of the series, as a secondary character. The main and some of the secondary characters from that book are supporting characters in this one. I think that makes good space in which all the characters from different books can interact. Sort of like Julia Quinn's Bridgerton and Smythe-Smith books. I just wish this book was also in audio format, as that was how I consumed book 1 of the Zodiac. The characters in A Reckless Soul are well rounded, with reasons to distrust humanity at large. As the plot develops, these 2 loners come to trust, respect, and love one another.

Overall, this was a very satisfying read.

4.0 out of 5 stars UNCONVENTIONAL HEROINE April 10, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition
I was given a copy of this book to review by the publisher. I have read other works by this author before. She has the knack of drawing the reader in to the story right from the first page. Her stories although set in the regency period are always that bit different from the norm. This particular tale is no different. Sophie is a spy working for Zodiac, she works alone. That is till she finds herself paired with Bruce another operative.

This is a fast moving and interesting read with many twists and turns. I love the way this author manages to push the boundaries in her period romances but at the same time make it believable. Great characters I particularly liked Sophie, she's my kind of heroine, with a very descriptive and flowing style I loved it.
