Last of the Jedi series,
This review is from: Against the Empire (Star Wars: Last of the Jedi, Book 8) (Paperback)
This has been the best series. It takes me about a day to whip through these books. I love them, and I really love the Star Wars saga. Jude Watson has a fantastic style of writing, and even though the age group targeted is much (much) younger than I am, it doesn't stop me from total enjoyment. I am never dissatisfied with the plot, character development, or the writing. I would love a longer book...

Another excellent installment of the Last of the Jedi series. This series is so wonderful. It packs so much into each books emotion, action and keeps you turning pages (unlike Legacy of the Jedi) and wishing the books would come faster and keep hoping there will be more after book ten. Ferus finally returns to his orginial mission which is locating any Jedi who may have survived the Purge. I'm glad since this was his orginial plan before he came up on Palpatine and Vader's radar. The last book and this one Ferus has been waiving. Struggling to remain a Jedi but its been getting harder and harder with Vader out to get him and Palpatine messing with him. You can feel Ferus waiving and then Obi Wan contacts him and that gets him back on track. You can almost feel Obi Wan knew Ferus was waiving and needed someone to remind him why he was in the middle all this in the first place. Obi Wan gives him what he needs to contiune his mission and even discusses with Obi Wan possiblities of Jedi who survived through reports that were put together about any people doing any unusual or Jedi like things including a toddler on Alderaan which Ferus dismisses out hand and natural worries Obi Wan enough to send Ferus right to Alderaan. It of course ends right there leading us to wait and wonder what's going to happen next. I love this series.

I cried and cried until all the tears in my eyes dried up . . . . ; _ ;,

Now . . . having read all 10 books of Last of the Jedi, I have come to the conclusion that THIS is the best work Jude Watson-san has ever done, really ! ( Um . . . my second favourite is Jedi Quest, by the way. )
Well . . . to be frank, I was already on the verge of tears when I was only half way through the story . . . and . . . I was really crying ( silently ) while I was reading the last 1/3 of it because I vaguely knew exactly what was coming which was inevitable ! *sniffles* Hmm, I believe this "Reckoning" IS filled to the brim with unconditional love, friendship, hope, betrayal, sacrifice and TRULY unexpected turn of events ! *sobs, facedesky* And I couldn't help but read the very last chapter, playing Princess Leia's Theme in my head because they really do match. Anyways, I really loved the ways Ferus chose to show his affection and love for Trever at the very end of the story and THAT made me cry some more and more until my nose got completely stuffy !! ; _ ; Arigatoh SO MUCH for creating all these wonderful characters of LotJ, Watson-san !! *bows*

This is probably one of the best of this series by Jude Watson and an excellent way to end this series. (Amazon - fix the author's name!)
When I first saw these "little" books published by Scholastic, I didn't really expect much from them. Boy, was I wrong! This has been a terrific series and while I am sorry to see the story line end, Jude Watson wraps up everything and ties it all together with the movie story line that everyone knows even if you don't know about all of the extra books.

A long time ago, in a galaxy far far away, two strong-willed powerful boys began training at the Jedi temple and found themselves destined for rivalry. Anakin Skywalker -- destined to become Darth Vader and Ferus Olin, destined to leave the Jedi Order in search of other things. The Jedi Temple is gone now -- the Jedi themselves are all but extinct. The rivalry, however, remains -- for Ferus Olin has learned the truth of Darth Vader and is determined to bring him down. Meanwhile, the quest to bring together a galactic resistance to the Empire continues, but there's a spy in the midst threatening to destroy everything.
We've all been waiting for that final confrontation between Ferus Olin and Darth Vader, and let me just say -- Jude Watson has some surprises in hand! Who will end up where when everything shakes out? You'll have to read to find out, but I guarantee it's going to be a fun ride. If you've been following "The Last of the Jedi" series, then this is exactly what you've been waiting for. And you haven't yet joined in on the fun, now is the time, as you can now read the full series, from beginning to end. Find out why these novels -- seemingly targeted at kids -- are so much more than they seem on the surface.

I'm a Star Wars Geek I don't mind the expanded Universe one bit...so far that even though I am an adult I read the scholastic books...Adults it's OK Jude Watson is a good writer and though the books she writes are for school aged kids the story lines are still compelling and there are even words that expand the vocabulary of the average adult this is the second series I have read the deals with pretty much the same era this one has more main stream characters ( Obi Wan , Bail Organa to name a couple) the other series was a bit more focused on Characters interacting with second and third tier characters with the exception of Darth Vader... Anyhow an Enjoyable Read.

This is on par with the last two books in the series (6 and 7). The storyline is wonderful. The characters have grown since book one, which is something not all writers seem to think to do, or maybe they don't necessarily need to for the context of their story, but it is needed here. So they've grown as individuals, and as a group. The lack of trust in Ferus seems to be gone from the last book, but the trust issue is brought up on a different character. It will be interesting to see how that is resolved in the next two books. I think Obi-wan's admonition about it being too early to gel all the different groups together is a good one, but it will be interesting to see how it plays out.
I have been writing my reviews immediately after reading each book, so I at this point do not know how the series ends, which is why my reviews are done in such a way. I can comment more on the individual book based on what has come before, but not after. I've also tried not to add too many spoilers, but it's been awful hard to do. I've tried to just center on the individual plot of that book and how it was written and how it plays out. With two books left to read, I am going to be sad when the series is finally over. It has been as very nice ride. And I cannot overstate just how well written the whole thing is. I would have to say that Jude Watson is one of the better authors, despite the fact this was written for the 9-12 year old age group. Many "adult" oriented books aren't this well written or conceived.

A fitting end to one of the best Star Wars series,

Years ago Ferus Olin and Anakin Skywalker were rival Padawans. Now they are competing for Emperor Palpatine's favour.
Ferus is playing a dangerous game of deception. While serving the Emperor he is also secretly trying to locate survivors of the Jedi purge and assist the fledging resistance moment. Rebel leaders from several planets have agreed to meet together, but as Ferus transports them to a secret base, he discovers a traitor in their midst. To save the rebellion, Ferrus must confront Vader in one final duel. Jude Watson pulls out all the stops and ends the Last of the Jedi series with a bang. Ferus is given a fitting send off and the supporting characters are given closure. Fair warning: don't expect "happily ever after". However it is this emotional sophistication and depth of characterisation, combined with well-paced action-filled plots, that made this series so enjoyable for Star Wars fans of all ages.

This is the eighth in a series of 10 that is actually one novel.
It is well written and moves well. I believe it is good reading for younger set and not bad for an adult. I have read every Star Wars novel with the exception of Invincible and this rank high on the list of all the stories. While each story can stand alone it is better if read together book 1 to 10. By the time you get to this book you want to get to the end that you don't want it to end. Because of the period it is in there are a lot of threads that are left to be followed. Although a conclusion of a sorts is written it is not as satisfying as it could be.

Could have been long novel,
This review is from: Reckoning (Star Wars: Last of the Jedi, Book 10) (Mass Market Paperback)
These 10 novelettes could have been put together into one normal sized novel. Brilliant to sell them separately. They are all very well written and only get better as the series progressed, culminating with this volume (10). Wonderful story...EXTREMELY well written. I was honestly sad to see the series end. I came to like Ferris and the other Jedi immensely. This series could be made into a feature movie easily. hmmmmmm.
highly recommended. |
