This review is from: Reclaiming Birth: History and Heroines of American Childbirth Reform (Paperback)
The Complete Book of Pregnancy and Childbirth (Revised)This is great expose of most hidden conditions around our birthing of both naatural midwifery & medical science tech birthing, comparing them in last 2 centuries. It gives more details & trends since 'Immaculate Deception' (S.Arms) opened the doors of medical birthing facts & supporting 'new' field of local natural midwifery in US in 1970s then to US later. However natural birthing began in medical prenatal training by Grantly Dick-Read in UK 1940s. Later LaMaze from France & many other women midwivfes secretly in US, also broke open critisicing medical deliveries from 1950s on.
The 2 women authors are charming, deep & pro midwifery, for LeBoyer & Odent in France gentle waterbirthing, that sloshed into US natural homebirthing movements in 1980s & later in a few hospitals. It exposes the mostly secret pro natural midwifery training & assisted birthings in US since 1960s. They give wonderful encouraging details for parents learning how medical deliveries are more scientific, secret, drugged, fast, dangerous & expensive in US & abroad.
But most nurse-midwives in Euro have been accepted & used in hospital deliveries routinely & homebirthing is still allowed. They share the many advantages of natural homebirthings. But the US medical OB specialty continues struggling to eliminate & outlaw midwifery state by state, in their secret battles to dominate birthing for profits continues. This is essential inspiring documentary of how & why midwifery is growing, & medicine still educates & works to stop & prevent homebirthing, We deeply need more sensitive midwives encouraging instincts & feminine intuition & gentle fathers at home for healthy births, while repsecting our civil rights for choosing where & how we deliver babies into Total Love bonding privately at home!
