5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent!
A gem! Not only does this book tell you the tell-tale signs of child abuse, but it goes through the more subtle signs that many of us miss every day and tells you plainly and concisely what to do about it. If you have suspicions that someone, not just children, around you is being abused and aren't quite sure if you should get involved or not or haven't any idea of how to...

1.0 out of 5 stars Reader Abuse
If you enjoy reading aspirin bottles you will love this book. The print was so small that I returned the book unread. I gave it a one star rating only because a one cloud rating was not an option.

If you have suspicions that someone, not just children, around you is being abused and aren't quite sure if you should get involved or not or haven't any idea of how to go about it, this book is certainly a good kick in the pants in the right direction! Certainly a must read for any person going into a field that may come in contact with abuse. Excellent for people that are wrongly accused of abuse or have abused children living in your home, this book is an absolute Godsend!

1.0 out of 5 stars Before you BUY this book for a penny or full price!, April 11, 2009
This review is from: Recognizing Child Abuse: A Guide For The Concerned (Paperback)
While watching Douglas Besharov's thoughts on the Satellite "Research Channel" I found some very disturbing information.

First.. Besharv never presented any source for his "Studies". He actually poked fun at statistics. I find his attitude extremely disturbing!

Second I turned on my computer and searched his book out and followed the link to an "Child Abuse" dot org site. It did not take long to find nearly every article written on this ORG web site was written by Besharv.
http://www.welfareacademy.org/

Instead of an "About Us" this web site should have said "About Doug".

Like the worst community college Instructor you ever had.. not only does "Doug" write nearly all the articles available on the subject of Child Abuse, but he has a wonderful page where you can BUY his Videos!

Considering the subject of Child Abuse and that Internet Video is available at no cost. It makes no sense to charge for videos that could save childrens lives. Or maybe Besharov is far more interested in himself, his bank account and his "Academy" whose only purpose is to sell and promote Douglas J. Besharov.

Social Scientists need to be held to a higher standard. Making unfounded claims and telling stories in today's digital world simply won't cut it.

To be credible you need to present solid numbers! Helpful, useful information that can save children's lives needs to be freely available via the Internet.

This book was first published in 1990. This is NOT the same country as it was in 1990. Doug needs to retire and a new book needs to be written supported by annotations, studies and an author that really cares about our children in trouble!
