Cosmo's Revenge,
By A Customer
This review is from: Recollection (Audio CD)
Here is a question for those who contend that this group has "integrity": How many of the songs on this album were composed by Stu Cook and/or Doug Clifford, or featured either of these gentlemen on lead vocals? When John Fogerty declined to re-form Creedence, Cook and Clifford recruited a vocalist who could do a passable impression of Fogerty, hired two other sidemen, and formed a fairly proficient cover band, trading on the Creedence name in an attempt to exact revenge upon Fogerty, while picking up a buck or two along the way. The members of "Creedence Clearwater Revisited" have the same variety of "integrity" as the so-called "Byrds Celebration" or Mike Love and Bruce Johnston's ersatz "Beach Boys," dragging an established and respected name through the mud for fun and profit. From a commercial standpoint, their use of the name makes sense. Although Fogerty can attract large crowds under his own name, Cook and Clifford couldn't draw enough fans to fill a broom closet without using the Creedence name. However, this group has one thing in common with the original band - Cook and Clifford are still unable to make a decent living in the music business without riding John Fogerty's coattails. The fact remains that John Fogerty was the heart, soul, and creative brain of the original band. Cook and Clifford have done nothing that countless other bassists and drummers could not have done as well, if not better. They were essentially backups, and were hardly indispensable. They needed Fogerty; unfortunately, however, Fogerty did not need them. In a sense, therefore, "Creedence Clearwater Revisited" is an ongoing temper tantrum by a couple of middle-aged men who should be embarrassed; they are impostors, and they know it. Considering that the original versions of these songs are still available, there is no reason to buy this set; in fact, there was no excuse for recording it in the first place. If Fogerty isn't on it, it isn't Creedence. Skip these fakers, and stick with the originals.

I'll bring earplugs to the state fair next year...,

I think it's somehow appropriate that these guys recently toured with the so-called Beach Boys, who now feature only the off-key Mike Love and frog-like Bruce Johnston from the 60's lineup. How in god's name did a talented musician like Elliot Easton ever wind up with this bunch? If Doug Clifford wants to lead a band, he should write some songs of his own, or else just play "Tearin' Up the Country" for two hours...

IMITATION IS THE SINCEREST FORM OF FLATTERY,
By James D Patton (Pennville, IN USA) - See all my reviews

This is a great 2 CD live set, with great sound quality, great mixing & great producing. I wasnt tricked into buying it. The band name is Creedence Cleerwater Revisited. not CC Revival. There is a picture on the back that shows the band members. I guess everyones main concern is the lead singer? Lead vocalist John Tristao sounds more like John Fogerty then John Fogerty does.. Hard to beleive? But very true. I was shocked & amazed at the same time. If you have the CCR The Concert CD. & The CCR Live In Europe CD. They are good cd's. But this one is better, much better! The live versions of CCR classic's on this 2 CD set all sound better then John Fogerty's versions on the Premonition CD. Sorry! It's just the truth.. Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. Well this band has it down to a T.

I asked for Willie and the Poor Boys and got this!,
By Kathleen Hennessy (Goffstown, NH USA) - See all my reviews

One Christmas, I asked for "Willie and the Poor Boys" and got this CD instead. Imagine my disappointment. The lead singer has nothing on John Fogerty, and isn't even a decent imitation. This band may own the rights to these songs that they didn't write, but that doesn't make it right. It all reminded me of the time when I was 12 and bought a John Denver's Greatest Hits album without realizing the songs were performed by some Starfish Musak Orchestra. If you're into the new Beach Boys, love Little Feat without Lowell George, INXS sans Michael Hutchence or 10,000 Maniacs minus Natalie Merchant, then I'll give you my copy. You'll deserve it.

A copy band,
By A Customer
This review is from: Recollection (Audio CD)
This just sounds like what it is: A copy band. Cook and Clifford are there, but they were not the main talent in the band (CCR), so they got three guys to fill in for what one guy (John Fogerty) used to do. Get Fogerty's live CD instead.

Creedence Clearwater Ravaged,
By A Customer
This review is from: Recollection (Audio CD)
Here's an interesting idea: Take the non-singing, non-composing rhythm duo (Stu Cook and Doug Clifford) from the original CCR, hire a marginally proficient sound-alike vocalist, add a keyboard player and an over-qualified guitarist, and hit the road playing a batch of songs written by someone else (John Fogerty). For those who like cover bands, this is a good album. It is tragic, however, that a talented musician like Elliott Easton opted to join this sad little band. Creedence? No, not really - this is just a couple of disgruntled backup musicians milking the legend for a few bucks and getting back at John Fogerty for his refusal to re-form CCR. If you think the current incarnation of the Beach Boys is as bad as it gets, guess again; the Cook-Clifford counterfeit CCR makes them look almost good by comparison. John Fogerty must be thrilled to see John Tristao waddling around on stage and screeching out all those CCR standards which he (Fogerty) wrote. Having already toured with the so-called "Beach Boys", this bunch should next consider touring with the "Byrds Celebration"; that would be very appropriate. Cook and Clifford should be ashamed of this travesty.

Classic Rock & Roll At Its Finest!!!,
By Pastor Roger "Roger R." (Chicago, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Recollection (Audio CD)
First off, I loved Creedence Clearwater Revival when I was a kid. Like many other bands & artists back in the day, I loved hearing their stuff on the radio. And thanks to oldies stations and classic rock stations, I still hear them. So the music hasn't died. As for the new band, Creedence Clearwater Revisited, I love them, too. I love this entire disc. The original CCR put out 2 live albums. But neither of them have 100 minutes of music as this live collection does. In fact, the second one, "CCR Live In Europe," was recorded as a trio. Tom Fogarty already left the band at that point. You can tell soemthing is missing lsitening to it. Many of the reviewers have said that they didn't like the new lead singer, John Tristao. Well, I think he sounds like John Fogarty more than John Fogarty does. While his voice isn't a 100% carbon copy, he sounds decent. Incidently, John Fogarty could have joined the new line up when they got back together. But he chose not to, by his own admission. He's now married again, retired from the music scene, and living with his wife & kids in Ft. Wayne, IN. I'm sure he's happy. I wish him well in his new life. And if you listen to John Fogarty's live album "Premonition," his voice sounds nice. But you can hear some signs of wear. He doesn't sound like he did on either of the original CCR live albums during his younger days. In addition to founding CCR members Stu Cook & Doug "Cosmo" Clifford, the new line up also features Elliot Easton. For those that don't know his name, he used to be in the new wave band The Cars. While I enjoyed The Cars during the 80's, I think his lead guitar parts sound much better in this band. I think he's the best left-handed guitarist in the business. Now, for those out there that 1)Don't like this disc, 2)Wish these guys weren't playing together, or 3)Both of the above, let me say this. Creedence Clearwater Revisited plays about 100 shows a year. That alone tells me that they're still in demand. Love them or hate them, people still flock to see them. I;m glad they're out there playing and I'm glad that recorded this live disc. It rocks from beginning to end. Rock on, guys!!! |
