This memoir is unusual in that it is not cited and apparently not known by major Peninsular War historians such as Oman, Glover or Weller. Captain Dobbs wrote many years after the events he describes and explains that he used Napier to refresh his memory. Nevertheless, Dobbs offers many candid insights into the daily life of a soldier on campaign, often with great detail, done in a very conversational style, sometimes interrupting himself with asides of interesting stories. The book is only 86 pages, but is like sitting and listening to an old veteran of the war. He concludes with his Christian testimony which adds personality to the narrative. It is to Spellmount's credit to reprint such a valuable work.
