Book Description

November 1994
When the indomitable Meriwether was banned from her home by Union soldiers because her husband was a Confederate officer, she spent the next two years bartering for food and shelter for herself and her three young sons. After the war, Meriwether embarked on a decades-long career as an author and advocate for the equality of women, keeping up the crusade until her death in 1916--the year congressional support for women's suffrage emerged.

5.0 out of 5 stars Female historical perspective, December 19, 2000

This review is from: Recollections of 92 Years, 1824-1916 (Paperback)
This book was written by my husband's great-great-great aunt. When I first received a copy and sat down to read it,I did so mainly for the 'family history'. However, I quickly became enchanted with Elizabeth Avery Merriweather and her fascinating tales of life as a woman during the Civil War. I highly recommend this book if you're looking for a unique gift for a history lover, Civil War buff, or for anyone who can appreciate a story about a determined woman overcoming obstacles in difficult & troubled times.

This review is from: Recollections of 92 Years, 1824-1916 (Paperback)
This is a very interesting book if you enjoy history and I do. There were a few places that seemed out of step on events or dates, but over all it was a good record of a writers life. Of course, Elizabeth's big project was Women's Rights and she was very active in that until she passed away which is also the time that women were able to vote...so her work was done. She met interesting people and always impressed people with her ideas and thoughts. I ran across Elizabeth in Joseph Davis, Jefferson Davis's older brother, book by J. Sharpe Hermann. Joseph read the short story of a literature contest winner by Elizabeth and left Vicksburg and showed up in Alabama on her front porch. They talked in tbe evenings and Joseph was very impressed with her mind! And according to Elizabeth she was impressed with Joseph. But the contact through Joseph to Elizabeth lead me to her husband, Colin, and then Nathan Bedford Forrest the famous confederate general. The writing is clear and moves well like it was written by a young lady yesterday. The book gives you a mental journey of Memphis and the South during a very tough time in history.
