Many Victorian writers fill their work with such flowery, stilted prose they often obscure their topic rather than illuminate it. Parker is a laudable exception. He writes well, maintains a sense of accuracy, does not try to refight the war, and tells his tale with humor and humanity. This is one of the finest, most objective and truthful Confederate memoirs I have ever read. Craig Symonds is the Dean of Civil War naval historians and has done a superb job bringing Parker's work to a large audience.
