I also have a child with autism, and he loved the Aquadoodle toy when he was 4! The pen is nice and thick so he could grasp it easily, and its mess free because they just use water. There are preprinted designs around the edge of the mat, and the mat itself is a great size (approx 2 ft x 3 ft) for kids.
Whatever your son's current obsession is (common at that age is vehicles) I would use that to build a list around; most manufacturers have a wide variety of toys for all skill levels. Hope that helps!
