5.0 out of 5 stars Really not a bad saw
This is a later model of the same saw as the one it replaced. The earlier model had a "tool onboard" feature, which would explain the "no tool provided" reviews.

I had to turn the idle speed up (which is the fix for "dies at idle"), and will need to adjust the low speed needle on the carb. This would be a "lags on throttle opening" complaint, which I...

3.0 out of 5 stars Weigh your option - used or new
I received no case, no T-wrench, just reconditioned chainsaw, bar, chain, and a manual. A few scratches, only cosmetic. Appears to come with one year warranty. If I had to do it over again, I would buy a new one, which includes a case, T-wrench, manual, and two year warranty. Runs alright, dies if you hit full throttle too quickly. Started easily right out of box, three...

Started easily right out of box, three or four pulls. Shipped quickly, arrived in Homelite heavy cardboard box securely wrapped.

This is a later model of the same saw as the one it replaced. The earlier model had a "tool onboard" feature, which would explain the "no tool provided" reviews.

I had to turn the idle speed up (which is the fix for "dies at idle"), and will need to adjust the low speed needle on the carb. This would be a "lags on throttle opening" complaint, which I didn't see.

The saw that this replaced had more than 900 hours on it. Asking far more than it was designed for was why it finally gave up. It will not hold up to 3' diameter cuts; the saw is running wide open too long, even with the two passes. I'm running an 18" bar on it, as it minimizes the time between sharpenings, and has that bit more reach.

This is a light duty limbing, or small tree saw. Consumer grade. The old one, the factory bar lasted all of four weeks, and this was turning it over every sharpening. An arborist grade bar was the fix, and I went through two of those as well. I was logging at the time, and using it for limbing. Five tanks of gas a day. Nearly nobody will run into this. Proof of the saw's durability within design.

Limiting work to 12" in diameter, this saw does very well. Most, if they read the book that comes with it, would never have a problem.

My next saw, which will be in addition, will be a Stihl with a 28" bar for the big stuff, but this one does all the smaller jobs.

As to bar oil, I buy it by the gallon. Logger grade stuff. It's thicker than what is branded by Homelite or any of the other brands. If it works for the big boys, it's going to work. NAPA is one source.

Gas always runs out first, and I've never had a chain fail through no lube. As far as a leak, never seen it.

That's my take, but I have years of saw experience; four with this one alone.

THE CHAIN SAW ARRIVED AS EXPECTED. THE ONLY THING WRONG WAS THAT IT DID NOT HAVE A TOOL TO INSTAL THE BAR AND CHAIN. A TOOL SUCH AS THAT SHOULD COME AUTOMATICALY WITH PRODUCT. OTHER WISE IT DID START AND RUN VERY WELL. NO COMPLAINTS.

I bought this chainsaw as a replacement for a homelite chainsaw that my husband liked for years. It didn't come with any cover as it said it would, but the chainsaw was just what he wanted and works great. He has been really happy with it. Great price.

Just like others say here, oil leaks a lot. The idle button sticks on mine and when you take your finger completely off the button, it dies. AND YOU CAN'T RETURN IT TO AMAZON for a refund! Their return rules state that you can't ship back any 'gas-powered item', which makes some sense. Don't buy this saw.

2.0 out of 5 stars Pay the extra money, May 26, 2010
This review is from: Factory Reconditioned Homelite ZR10926 16-Inch 33cc Ranger Gas-Powered Antivibration Chain Saw (Lawn & Patio)
I just bought a Homelite chain saw at Home Depot. It lasted for an hour on a big tree I was cutting then just died. Before it died, the chain flew off four times even when it was tight. Also, the muffler is in a bad spot and I burnt my finger trying to fix the chain. Needless to say, it went back to Home Depot and I purchased a Echo chain saw. Works like a dream. It was an extra 100 bucks but you can tell and see the difference in quality and performance. Also the muffler is hidden and it is super easy to handle. Also quiet. Lesson learned again. Do not be a cheap skate. Pay the extra money and get the better quality item.

4.0 out of 5 stars Had Homelite Chainsaw for 5 years Now, March 7, 2010

I have had a 16" Ranger for over 5 years and am pleased with the performance. We had a destructive winter storm here in NY and I needed to cut up trees and tree limbs that had fallen. I put a new chain on as the old one was dull (and I didn't want to spend the time sharpening. The chainsaw worked fine, strong and easy starting. I agree with the comments about chain oil usage. I bought a less viscous oil at Home Depot than I had been using and found that I was really going through the oil (Echo). This is OK as it protects better. My unit was purchased new and came with sharpening files (never used!), tool and case. This is good for medium duty. I would purchase again.

the oil and gas fill openings are in a bad place, they leak! Particularly the chain oil cap. The saw is heaver and the spark plug is harder to access than in my old 2x. This saw is OK, but just Ok. If I had seen it , I wouldn't have bought it! RB

1.0 out of 5 stars daves dissapointement, August 24, 2008
This review is from: Factory Reconditioned Homelite ZR10926 16-Inch 33cc Ranger Gas-Powered Antivibration Chain Saw (Lawn & Patio)
I had intended to rerurn this item after using it but found it was not returnable. It wont run when warm and the chain oiler does not work. That explains why the bar was discolored when I received it. I had not understood that items with gasoline are not returnable. The repair facilities are not very conveniently located to me.
Sincerely, dissapointed Dave
