I've read numerous complaints about the "tooless" tightening system that this saw is equipped with, and yes, it is a badly designed system (plastic parts that should be made of metal strip out too easily).

However, if your saw is under the two year warranty, chances are that Poulan will replace the tooless system with the traditional system that uses a screwdriver for chain tightening absolutely free. I called them on a Friday, got the old-style part by Tuesday. Saw works great now and tightening of the chain is still really easy.

If you're having probs, contact Poulan or go to [...]. i couldn't be happier with mine.

When I first purchased this chainsaw, it was a monster. It "chewed up", everything and anything I threw at it. But after the 3rd use, the chain loosed up sooner, and was difficult to tighten. Soon, after cutting one piece of wood, the chain would literally dangle from the saw. It was quick to fall off the bar, and I stopped putting up with it after the chain fell off the bar, and hit my leg causing a serious injury. I took the saw back, and the store where I purchased it said they have received multiple complaints. Please, don't buy this saw. Do your research, and put your hard earned money towards something that will last.

Pluses:
- The unit arrived and appeared brand new, never used.
- Fired right up on the first try.
- More than enough power to get through everything I've tried to cut.

Minuses:
- As received, the nut retaining the blade clutch was loose so tighten this if you plan on running the engine much before cutting.
- The "Tool less blade tensioning system" is a joke. Frankly, it's an incredibly bad design and unsafe.
- I bough the saw knowing this as most of the new Husqvarna/Poulan and Sears Craftsman have this feature also so I went ahead and ordered the old tensioning system from Poulan (P/N #530054819). Even with the added cost I still saved a lot over the cost of a new saw.

Came in and the bar adjustment gears were all stripped. Very hard to get started. Everything about it is low quality. I find myself working on the saw more than cutting wood. It is bad to be 60 ft. in the air and have to crawl down to work on this pc. of junk , then crawl back up just to have the chain come off on you. can not keep the chain in adjustment due to the way it is designed. upon trying to tighten the chain over and over again, the tensioner knob even broke because it is plastic just like the gears are. Very disappointed with this saw.

I bought the chainsaw understanding you take a chance on the engine, oiler, etc. When it arrive I had to put on the bar and chain. The bar and chain were not new. The bar was beat up down by the tip, and the chain would not turn when I put it on, because the teeth that move in the bar were severly damaged. If I have to buy a new bar and chain it would have been the cost of a new unit. DO NOT BUY FROM THIS RECONDITIONER THEY ARE A RIPOFF. I have bought reconditioned chainsaws in the past and no one has tried to pawn off a used bar and chain with the saw. I had to file down the teeth to get it to track in the bar to get it to run, unit seems to run ok, but when you order reconditioned I did not think the bar and the chain would have more than half the live gone!

Should have given more credibility to the negative reviews. Looked at this model first at Lowes and liked how light it was, and after checking for the best price, decided to purchase it from Amazon because of their free shipping and return policies.
After 5 minutes of really great performance ripping through logs the chain came off. It took a half hour to re-install the chain the FIRST time, from there its been down hill.
The bar is thin and flimsy and made of soft metal which wears really fast and tends to bend near the drive gear due to poor drive gear/bar alignment. I determined that the last time I re-installed the chain (2 1/2 hours).The chain quick adjusting mechanism is totally mickey mouse and would have been better off scrapping the idea and going with a screw adjuster and two bolts to hold the cover in place.I'll probably do that myself at a later date!
In closing, the ill fitting chain adjuster/cover assembly (plastic, could have gotten away with it if it was metal) and cheaply made bar and chain, turns a very powerful and wonderfully light chainsaw, into a useless piece of equipment. If you buy it, you'll spend much more time repairing it than cutting with it. I actually investigated into getting a better bar and chain, but for the $45 it would cost,I'd be better off to junk it and go with a better made chainsaw.

Just recieved it last night and the chain adjustor doesn't work right out of the box. Never got a chance to start it because the chain couldn't be tightened. I an really pissed. Item was removed from my shopping cart for 3 days because of complaints for this and I assumed some corrective action was taken.
WRONG!
I am going to call Poulan tonight.

item arrived (finally) --- was missing parts and had a broken tension chain adjustment, in short un-useable ... did some research via the web and found that the broken piece(s) was a common problem and probably why it was returned to the factory in the first place --- whoever was supposed to 'recondition' this was evidently out to lunch that day --- I will say that after some prodding on my part Amazon did finally take it back and fully refund my $$ even though they said they had a no return policy in place on recondtioned items --- BUYER BEWARE

I have always used Stihl chainsaws in the past. Recently needing a new chainsaw and unable to afford a Stihl I just purchased the Poulan Pro and am very pleasantly surprised. At first the saw seems to be very insubstantial with a lot of plastic and very flimsy. However it has held up well and cuts well and is very light. Keep the chain sharp and this is a great tool for the money.

(I updated the subject line after seeing another post) I had been interested in this saw, and appreciate the many warnings posted here about the plastic tensioner. I had one question not previously addressed. Given that this is a factory reconditioned model, does it come with the original warranty? (two years) or is it something far less? Huge question that Amazon product page here doesn't answer. A rep. on the phone at Poulan customer service sounded VERY confident that the factory reconditioned models only have a 90 DAY WARRANTY. Worse, we now have customers who've bought this thing indicating that the documentation for their saw indicates only a 30 day warranty. (!?) Can any one else confirm that? Add that to all the MANY reports here of saws being sent out with sloppy reconditioning, worn chains, broken this and that, not being able to return to Amazon, and this deal sounds too risky. Spend fifty dollars more and get one with a new two year warranty. Amazon, it seems to me, is misleading customers by not properly indicating the severely reduced warranty on this item.
