I was all set to rent a pro unit to paint my garage, when I saw a deal on a reconditioned 770. Based on previous experience with Wagner consumer spray guns, I was doubtful, but ordered it anyway. And I'm very glad I did.

Unlike the little hand-held diaphragm sprayers, this gun is light, easy to handle, and puts out a huge volume of paint with no spitting or dribbling. It easily handled the heavy acrylic latex I used on my garage.

The gun supplied with this sprayer is a professional unit, and the pump puts out as much paint as a lot of commercial grade painters. After spending perhaps a half-hour taping and masking, I had my entire garage painted in less time than it took to do the prep!

Cleanup was maybe another half hour, and simple, using the Wagner cleaning and lube solution, if you carefully follow the instructions in the booklet. Hint: After you pour out excess paint in the hopper, use a squeegee to get that lest bit back into the bucket, rinse it with water, and use heavy-duty paper towels to get the last bits out. Then fill the hopper with cleaner, flush, and lube.

One hint: You absolutely want to install a swivel on the gun before using this unit- it's inexpensive, and makes handling the gun much, much easier.

5.0 out of 5 stars Saved me a ton of time and work!, August 27, 2008

This review is from: Reconditioned Wagner 0515000T Spray Tech 2,750 PSI Paint Crew Sprayer (Tools & Home Improvement)
I bought the refurbished Paint Crew 770 to paint my house and I'm really glad I did. I was able to spray the whole house in a few hours. Unpacking it, I could tell it had been used before, but it was cleaned up very well. The hose, spray tip and manual were all new, and I believe the filter was too. From other reviews I was worried about the thickness of my exterior paint clogging up the spray gun. I was using Pittsburgh ultra exterior latex satin finish, and I never had any trouble at all, not even a single clog. The sprayer put down a very nice pattern that was easy to work with, and I was able to cover dark green with light beige on metal siding with just one coat! The only thing at all negative I can say was that the hose was a little stiff, but it got more flexible as the day heated up. I did add a swivel connector (Google "insert swivel connector airless" and it will be the first result) which definitely made it easier.
Here are some tips that really helped me out. If you need to stop spraying for a while (10+ minutes) and you are using latex based paint, you can just dunk the spray gun in a bucket of water and leave it there until you return. You'll also want to keep the paint in the hopper from drying out by pouring about a ½ cup of water on top of the paint and swishing it around to cover the entire surface. Just mix the water into the paint when you are ready to start again. I was able to pause painting for six hours between coats on some shutters this way and it was like I never stopped.
After you refill, the pump may run continuously and you can't spray. If this happens, it's probably because the inlet valve is stuck shut. Wagner recognized this problem and provides a plastic tab sticking up in the bottom of the hopper that you can press with a paint stirrer - this will in turn push the inlet vale and free it. You'll know you got it when the pump reaches its pressure limit and stops.
Cleanup is not nearly as bad as it sounds. In fact it makes sense if you just think about it for a second. Get the paint out of the hopper, clean the hopper, get the paint out of the hose and gun, clean the hose and gun. There is a tube that goes to the top of the hopper that is used for priming the pump. It is flexible so you can make it dump anywhere you want. When you put the sprayer on the "prime" setting, it will pump whatever is in the hopper though this tube. Just stick the end of the tube in your original paint container and switch to prime, and it will pump all the leftover paint out of the hopper. Use a silicone or rubber spatula to get every last drop to the inlet valve. Now rinse out the hopper. Fill it with clean water, turn it on prime again except this time have the tube dump into a waste container. Keep pumping clean water though the system until the prime tube runs clear.
Now we need to get the paint out of the hose. Fill the hopper with clean water. Remove the spray tip from the gun and throw in a bucket of water. Put the machine on "spray", and trigger the gun into your original paint container until water starts coming out. Seal up your paint container, that's all you're getting back. Take the gun off the hose and take it apart (handle, filter, spring, washer, swivel (if you bought one) and main gun assembly) and throw it in a bucket of water - hand wash these parts and the spray tip.
Fill the hopper with clean water again and run the machine on "spray" until water coming out of the hose is clear. I also run it without water in the hopper until the hose has no more water in it, but not sure if that's advisable or not. I'll risk it.
Hand wash the gun parts. The manual says to drop some oil in the gun body for storage, but does not say what kind. You can use any kind of clean oil really. Wagner makes some especially for this, but you can also use 3 in 1 oil, hydraulic oil, motor oil, or even canola oil. Drop about a tablespoon of oil into the inlet vale in the hopper too to protect the piston.
It sounds complicated but once you've done it once or twice it is really quite easy. I can do it in about 25 minutes now. Just make sure you put the filter back in the right way, otherwise you'll get lots of pressure and no paint next time.

4.0 out of 5 stars So far so good, May 15, 2007

The equipment looks like new. I had been using this for about a month to paint everything I can and the sprayer give a incredible finish. When I read the manual, it seems to me that the cleaning process will be real complex, but actually is very very easy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wagner Paint Crew 770, June 2, 2008

This review is from: Reconditioned Wagner 0515000T Spray Tech 2,750 PSI Paint Crew Sprayer (Tools & Home Improvement)
Hello,

I am repainting the interior of a 2,000 sqft home with 15 raised panel doors. I started brushing a door and that took me about 30 mins per side. With the best Kelly Moore paint and good quality brush the results were not satisfactory; too long and brush strokes. I then tried my HVLP spray gun but you really have to thin the latex paint. Again, poor results; too slow and "dry spots". I decided to gamble $99 for a reconditioned Wagner Paint Crew 770. Once I set it up with a 313 tip and sprayed my first door, I had the feeling of "why didn't I know about this sooner?" I could paint one side of a door in under one minute!!!!! I added a little paint conditioner, strained the paint first and produced near professional results. With latex paint! I can't imagine applying latex paint any nicer than with this airless sprayer.

The product arrived in almost new condition with all accessories no damage. Set up was easy. Buy a swivel for the gun to make managing the hose easier and a few tips depending on your job. This product is worth every penny! It is a joy to use.

Cons; take the time to thoroughly clean up following the instructions to the letter. This is NOT terrible as some say, but will take about 40 mins to do correctly. Work smart; drop cloth. You need to move the gun quickly as it lays down a lot of paint. Wear respirator and proper clothing. You can easily go through a gallon ($30)in a few minutes.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great condition - Great production, August 6, 2007
This review is from: Reconditioned Wagner 0515000T Spray Tech 2,750 PSI Paint Crew Sprayer (Tools & Home Improvement)
First off, I received the Reconditioned Wagner Spray tech last Wednesday after ordering it on the previous Saturday. That was very fast considering I used the free shipping option.

Initially I started rolling stain onto my fence. After two days of tedious rolling I decided it was worth $100 to try this product. I'm very glad I did. I ended up spraying the majority of my fence in about 2-3 hours...what would have taken at least 16 hours to do by roller. The even spray pattern, quick startup, and fairly easy cleanup made this one of my best purchases in a long time.

Two things you should have on hand is Household oil for after cleanup, and Mineral Spirits for oil based paints/stains during cleanup. A swivel for the gun would be great to have, but it works fine without, you just fight the hose a bit.

The condition of the Reconditioned Wagner was excellent, and feel this is a much better deal than getting a new one.

3.0 out of 5 stars Pros and Cons, but great for homeowners, July 24, 2008

This review is from: Reconditioned Wagner 0515000T Spray Tech 2,750 PSI Paint Crew Sprayer (Tools & Home Improvement)
I used to paint professionally and have used professional sprayers. Now, many years later, I needed to stain (Sherwin-Williams solid color exterior oil stain) my house. I was very surprised how well the sprayer worked. Stains are notorious for streaking, but I had no problem fading in new strokes. The price was about the cost of rental, so I basically got it for free. Cleaning is not much fun, but hardly unbearable. Cleaning effort is reasonable for occasional homeowner use for big jobs. My biggest gripe is that in the manual, it says not to use industrial enamels. This wipes out my use for my favorite Sherwin-Williams Industrial Enamel - a rock solid paint, as well as Sherwin-Williams Duration which is thick as molasses. This is a MAJOR GRIPE because you should see this kind of limitation in the product's ad, not buried in the instruction manual after you buy. Overall, this is not a heavy-duty machine, so I would never consider it for pro or commercial use. If you plan to use it every few years, it seems a great deal. It is lightly made as is typical of consumer stuff these days. Spray volume is not huge, but many people could not handle the volume of a pro machine anyway. One final note. When I first went to use it, it would not work. I dumped out the stain, then gently poked a screwdriver into the inlet, depressing the ball. The inside filled with stain. I started and it ran fine and has been fine since. That little trick may save you a return!

Just remember to add a little water to your paint so it doesn't clog. Also, make sure you keep moving the head or you'll get runs in the wall. I painted several rooms in record time. Remember that overspray will get everywhere so make sure you mask everything. We were lucky because the rooms were empty and we were changing out the carpet. I also bought the attachment that lets you swivel the spray head. This makes life easier. I also didn't think the cleanup was too bad. I ran water through the sprayer and then washed everything down. You should then use a liquid they sell for storage that you run through the unit.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great painting companion, March 15, 2008
This review is from: Reconditioned Wagner 0515000T Spray Tech 2,750 PSI Paint Crew Sprayer (Tools & Home Improvement)
I was concerned that this being a reconditioned unit, it would be flawed. I took a chance based on some previous reviews and I'm glad I listened. The unit operated perfectly. The only thing I hate about this unit and I could say it for every other unit too is the cleaning up part. I would purchase this unit again!

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic product, November 8, 2007

This review is from: Reconditioned Wagner 0515000T Spray Tech 2,750 PSI Paint Crew Sprayer (Tools & Home Improvement)
I was skeptical about this product so I also ordered the $10 one year money back if it fails extended warranty. Now after one use of this amazing sprayer I am very very pleased with it.

I used it to start painting a very large house. It made fast work and it looks wonderful. Like so many have said to do, I bought the swivel end from Lowe's. It really helps.

I hate painting but this actually makes it fun and since you can do it quickly painting is not really to bad. Others have complained about clean up. I have cleaned other sprayers far worse than this one. I was using latex so I guess being able to use water helped. After spraying approximately 3 gallons of warm soapy water through it I took everything apart and cleaned more and lubed it with WD40. This took about 45 min.

The way I look at it if I would have use a brush or roller to paint what I got done with this sprayer it would have taken days instead of hours so an additional 45 min. of cleaning is worth it. Heck I spend almost that much time cleaning brushes and rollers. Hope this helps, Good Luck!
