After reading "Disconnected Kids" and having my child evaluated at one of Dr. Melillo's Brain Balance Centers, I had an opportunity to listen to a discussion (or should I say lecture?)and book-signing by Dr. Melillo at the center. I was positively pre-disposed toward him and his program but found his know-it-all arrogance and what came across as an oversimplified approach to every sort of academic or behavioral issue that a parent might encounter, off-putting. He preached-at us and failed to acknowledge any credibility in the research or theories of any other well-respected, highly-qualified & innovative authorities in the areas of childhood brain dysfunctions or education who can boast a high rate of success(i.e. Drs. Daniel Amen, Ed Hallowell & John Ratey & educators Erik Jensen, Bobbi DePorter & Jenifer Fox , to name a few). Melillo drew instant conclusions about some of our children based on a few bits of information and showed little respect for any conflicting opinions that parents expressed (though ours were based on much more complete background info & intense observations, often accompanied by many hours of study, reading & research in our efforts to better understand our kids' issues--along with trying various failed or partly-successful treatments and programs over the years). So I was surprised, after I began reading "Reconnected Kids", at how quickly my opinions about Dr. Melillo's Brain Balance program (as outlined in "Disconnected Kids") and the Family Empowerment Program presented in "Reconnected Kids" turned positive. Though far from easy to effectively implement, it all makes so much sense and seems much less simplistic than either the first book or (especially) Dr. Melillo's lecture (which had struck me as close-minded and almost obnoxiously evangelical regarding his own proprietary ideas). Dr. Melillo admits to a 10-year period of lost focus and failure in his own past and seems much more human, caring and likeable....not so "full of himself". So since this is a book review, I'm basing my rating on the book alone, and not the perception (or misperception) of Dr. Melillo that I came away with after hearing him speak

3.0 out of 5 stars OK August 27, 2011

My child went through the Brain Balance Center program 3 times. Unfortunately during and after the program my son's regression has caused him to get less time in a general education classroom and more time in the spec ed classroom. According to the author (IMO) since my child didn't improve using his theories it is my fault because I'm obviously a poor parent. This sort of arrogance annoys me but is all too common in the world of treating autism. I know of other bad parents whose children showed little improvement with the program. But to be fair, I also know some good parents whose kids did benefit using the authors theories, inside and outside of the Center. The book did offer some very good ideas to implement into family life (some of which we already do) which I appreciated. I enjoyed the ideas presented in the book and I agree with several ideas of the author and hope those ideas are brought into the Brain Balance Center for parent training.
