After reading "Disconnected Kids" and having my child evaluated at one of Dr. Melillo's Brain Balance Centers, I had an opportunity to listen to a discussion (or should I say lecture?)and book-signing by Dr. Melillo at the center. I was positively pre-disposed toward him and his program but found his know-it-all arrogance and what came across as an oversimplified approach to every sort of academic or behavioral issue that a parent might encounter, off-putting. He preached-at us and failed to acknowledge any credibility in the research or theories of any other well-respected, highly-qualified & innovative authorities in the areas of childhood brain dysfunctions or education who can boast a high rate of success(i.e. Drs. Daniel Amen, Ed Hallowell & John Ratey & educators Erik Jensen, Bobbi DePorter & Jenifer Fox , to name a few). Melillo drew instant conclusions about some of our children based on a few bits of information and showed little respect for any conflicting opinions that parents expressed (though ours were based on much more complete background info & intense observations, often accompanied by many hours of study, reading & research in our efforts to better understand our kids' issues--along with trying various failed or partly-successful treatments and programs over the years). So I was surprised, after I began reading "Reconnected Kids", at how quickly my opinions about Dr. Melillo's Brain Balance program (as outlined in "Disconnected Kids") and the Family Empowerment Program presented in "Reconnected Kids" turned positive. Though far from easy to effectively implement, it all makes so much sense and seems much less simplistic than either the first book or (especially) Dr.Read more ›

My child went through the Brain Balance Center program 3 times. Unfortunately during and after the program my son's regression has caused him to get less time in a general education classroom and more time in the spec ed classroom. According to the author (IMO) since my child didn't improve using his theories it is my fault because I'm obviously a poor parent. This sort of arrogance annoys me but is all too common in the world of treating autism. I know of other bad parents whose children showed little improvement with the program. But to be fair, I also know some good parents whose kids did benefit using the authors theories, inside and outside of the Center. The book did offer some very good ideas to implement into family life (some of which we already do) which I appreciated. I enjoyed the ideas presented in the book and I agree with several ideas of the author and hope those ideas are brought into the Brain Balance Center for parent training.

The Brain Balance franchise system takes this therapy and offers a very expensive, and one size fits all, treatment plan with a very heavy sales pitch. Look for a local Responsive Therapy specialist.

This GPA program in this book has really helped restructuring the behavioral aspects in the home. It has given me and my wife a clear picture of what we want for our family and children.

My nephew went to Brain Balance in NY, and actually went in with ADHD and came out testing off the spectrum! Amazing! One of the best things that my sister had ever done to help my nephew. In addition, as an author myself, Reconnected Kids is beautifully written, an easy read for ANY parent, not just those with children who are afflicted with neurobehavioral problems. This book has been helpful in setting structure for my 3 year old and gives an exemplary insight on what is going on with kids today. Thanks Dr. Melillo!

The general advise in the book - to balance left and right brain with right amount of stimulation - is really no mystery. We all know a well rounded child will be more happy and successful in life.

The book talks about left brain and right brain imbalance in very general terms. I don't think we can categorically say a child is either left or right or both brain problem. Some description matches and some descriptions doesn't. I give one star to this book because I found the content in this book almost useless because it doesn't offer any concrete actionable advise. Is this book for diagnosed problematic child only? It should say so in the title...

It does feel like a big advertisement for the Brain Center paid services.

Reconnected Kids, Disconnected Kids and the Brain Balance program = GAME-CHANGER for my family! As parents of a child with autism, we have spent YEARS and thousands of dollars trying to find 'the thing' that would help him to reach his full potential, not be robotic and allow him to THRIVE in our family. We enrolled in Brain Balance before Disconnected Kids came out and had tremendous success. I often call it the "Perfect Storm" of sensory/motor/cognitive stimulation with nutrition work. Now that we are further along in the process with our son, having "Reconnected Kids" as a resource is invaluable. I LOVE how the empowerment plan gives simple steps to take as a family to implement change and work with our 'blossoming' son. I recommend this book and the Brain Balance program highly! Yes, we drank the "Kool-aid" and are so VERY happy we did.
