Editorial Reviews

From the Back Cover

This second edition of Reconstructing Quaternary Environments has been revised and updated to provide a new look at the various forms of evidence that can be used to establish the history and scale of environmental changes during the Quaternary. The evidence is extremely diverse, ranging from landforms and sediments, to fossil assemblages and stable isotope ratios. Dating methods are described and evaluated, and the principles and problems of Quaternary stratigraphy and correlation are also considered.

The volume concludes with a new final chapter which examines the evidence for environmental change in the North Atlantic region during the course of the last 130,000 years. This synthesis not only serves to exemplify the methods and approaches that have been described earlier in the book, but it also introduces a number of exciting new ideas that have emerged during the past decade about the patterns and causes of climatic change, as well as the nature of the environmental responses that these induced.

Written for undergraduate students and professionals of Earth Science, Environmental Science, Physical Geography, Geology, Botany, Zoology, Ecology, Archaeology and Anthropology.

J John Lowe is Professor of Geography and Quaternary Science, in the Department of Geography, Royal Holloway, University of London, UK. Michael J.C. Walker is Professor of Geography, in the Department of Geography, University of Wales, Lampeter, UK. Both authors have over twenty years research experience and have published over one hundred papers in this field.

This review is from: Reconstructing Quaternary Environments (2nd Edition) (Paperback)
This is a fantastic introductory textbook, providing an overview of field and lab techniques for palaeoenvironmental investigation. Written in simple, clear language it gives background on methods as well as more in-depth attention to the practical applications of each. I found it particularly useful for understanding new (to me!) tools even at a postgraduate level. Methods are applicable to a wide range of environments and allows the reader to develop a comprehension of processes to aid in interpretation of results. In addition, the bibliography includes some of the seminal works in various techniques, thereby providing an excellent reference list for more focus on relevant details. Highly recommended for earth science students at both graduate and undergratuate levels, particularly for those who do not have a strong physical science background.
