Outstanding Singer/Songwriter, May 16, 2010

I discovered Thea Gilmore by accident while I was looking for Christmas songs in the middle of May. And that just about describes Thea, Christmas in the middle of May. Amazon was giving away a free download of Thea's "That'll Be Christmas," & for free, it was worth listening to. I liked it a lot, & went through her other songs/albums for sale. She's the best singer/songwriter I've heard in many years. Her lyrics are intelligent & meaningful, & her music is very good as well. Her songs on this album are live, but you'd never know it from the sound or performance quality, both of which are excellent. Her music ranges from folk to full-blown Rock & Roll. The two standouts on this CD are my two favorite songs by her overall. "If You Miss Me at the Back of the Bus" is a catchy, sing-along song about Civil Rights that was written by Charles Neblett & performed in the 1960s by Pete Seger, among others. Thea does a wonderful job with this song. "This Girl is Taking Bets" has terrific lyrics & really rocks. Thea's like a breath of fresh air in a stagnant place, or like Christmas in the month of May.
