My daughter is in the 4th grade and just started playing recorder, specifically the ultra cheap models supplied to every student by the school. She chose to buy this recorder/book combo (with a little parental advice). Certainly it isn't a fine quality instrument, but it is a very noticeable step above what she had. It plays more smoothly through the range and has a better tone overall. Her enjoyment of music has increased dramatically because her instrument actually works. She plays informally every day, usually several times, for the last six months.

The book that comes with it is pretty good too. Seems like a decent progression of skills and provides some good practice tunes, many of which are common enough for her to recognize. Honestly, she hasn't used the CD very much, although it provides a good example of what the songs are supposed to sound like.

The recorder is made from molded plastic, even though it vaguely resembles wood in color. It is a pleasing shape, a little different than the most typical plastic models. She likes it a lot and is pleased with her purchase, which at her age is a significant cash outlay.

So if you're not expecting a professional quality instrument, but something that plays all the notes relatively smoothly and is nearly bulletproof, I think this is a good choice. The book provides good practice material, although the instructional part isn't very detailed. The CD can be useful for examples, and possibly to play along if you wish. Overall a good combo.
