I was a bit surprised about the lack of reviews for this book, because it is the ONLY book I ever reference when I run into a problem in the studio. And believe me, I own a lot of books on recording.

I bought this book in 1999 and have had no need to even look for other books on recording since. What makes this book so much better than the others is the quality of the information. Every sentence and tip in the recording section conveys a new useful point. There is absolutley no extraneous information here. All the techniques that I have learned from this book have worked like magic. Acoustic guitars and vocals have never sounded better.

The only downside of this book is the lack of a chapter on recording bass guitar. There is an entire chapter devoted to the future of ananlog tape, but absolutely nothing on recording bass guitar. Otherwise, the book is fantastic, and easily worth the [money] price. Happy recording...

If you are a musician or songwriter ready to record your material, but don't know how, this is not the book for you. Peter McIan's "Using Your Portable Studio" is the best 1st step in learning recording & production. This book is a good 2nd step because White assumes the reader has a basic knowledge of recording. The book is loaded with lots of useful information, tips, and cool recipes for making interesting recordings. However, he often delivers the goods non-chalantly: a method will be described in a few sentences in the middle of a paragraph and then White will move on. The main criticism of this book is the way the chapters are sub-divided; often un-necessarily. While it puts the information into bite-size pieces, slightly longer sections would help keep the material focused since so many of the sections overlap. Paul White has MANY books in publication. However, most of them seem to draw off of this book. If you had to buy just one of his books, this would be the one.

The book gives you everything: from how to plan a sassion and arranging all the way to mastering. Full of usefull tips and techinques to get the job done. Setting up mics for acoustic guitar and using the right effect on vocals is easy after reading this book.

This book definitely has some great nuggets of information. I read it cover to cover, and will probably turn back to it as reference. It does assume a basic level of understanding with regards to recording and production in general.

If you are starting to record at home, this book is a must. Very simple, but most informations are very well used. Not for beginners (you must know some basic before), more for intermediate.
