This new reissue of the long sought after post-Monkees 1971 solo album by Davy Jones has long been in demand , and has finally been released on CD. The much beloved multi-talented Jones is featured on the original album's 12 tracks, plus 2 non-LP singles, and mono versions of 4 songs. RAINY JANE written by Neil Sedaka & Howard Greenfield got a lot of airplay , even though Billboard charted the song nationally at only #52. But it's hard to fathom how this album didn't even make the Top 200 chart. After all these decades of waiting, Friday Music had the sense to issue both of Davy's albums, and on this , the sound is crystal clear, from the original masters. It is also a huge bonus to have Davy's well known original version of GIRL finally available on CD. This single only track was featured in the film " The Star Spangled Girl ", but grew in stature due to Davy's appearance on " The Brady Bunch ". This single didn't chart, but came to be more well known after all the decades of reruns of that episode, The Monkees appearing in the comedy spoof " The Brady Bunch Movie ", and Davy performing it in innumerable concerts over the years. Even on that movie soundtrack, it was redone by Davy, so here is that rare original version of GIRL. The entire set of songs makes it's CD debut .
The album was produced by Jackie Mills and arranged by Al Capps, the team responsible for Bobby Sherman's hits, and who produced albums by The Brady Bunch. Clearly, the direction he and Bell Records chose for Davy's important first post-Monkees album was not even close to the league of producers that The Monkees had, including themselves. It was a near impossible task to reach the quality & diversity of The Monkees songs and albums. With that taken into account, this is an admirable set of work, and most fans who have been clamoring for this album to be reissued on CD will devour every song. Along with the 2 most well known songs, the album opener, ROAD TO LOVE , is a standout number, where Jones gets to swing amid horns & brass backing. David Gates' LOOK AT ME is given a dramatic rendering by Davy, and gives the album more diversity, as does the moody TAKE MY LOVE. Ballads like I REALLY LOVE YOU, and another non-LP rarity, I'LL BELIEVE IN YOU, also are a welcome departure that give Davy more depth . Many of the album's other songs are lightweight sugary showbiz confections that frankly are far beneath Davy's multi-faceted talents. Songs like SINGIN' TO THE MUSIC and SITTING IN THE APPLE TREE weigh the album down, but given the producers & the selection of some of the songs, it's nowhere near what Davy had with The Monkees, which was the freedom to write & produce, as well as work with the very best songwriters of the day. But Davy was a smart man, and had a big sense of humor, as when he interjects some ad-libs at the end of the old vaudeville style SITTING IN THE APPLE TREE. It would have been wonderful to have some material with Davy's R&B leanings, as he did on many of his Monkees classics, but this being 1971, AM radio was very powerful, and the striving for a commercial hit was a factor, especially given who the producers were. With that in mind, it would be hard to equal that glorious canon of catalog that is The Monkees recorded work. There should have been more albums made by Davy after this. The same applies to Micky Dolenz. How the two lead singers of The Monkees did not get signed by a record company to do more solo albums in the 70's and beyond that is puzzling and a real loss. Hopefully, a label will do a CD compilation of all of Micky's singles from the 70's and early 80's , as it is sorely needed and much demanded by the legions of fans still waiting for a Micky Dolenz CD compilation. But this reissue is most welcome, plus it has crystal clear sound, is taken from master tapes, and has some very nice liner notes & photos. It was lovingly done, and most welcome. After Davy's shocking passing, it is hard to believe that he is no longer around providing all the joy and happiness that he brought to the world with his music , performances and acting talents. This CD is a labor of love, and well worth owning.
