Editorial Reviews

Vincent Gallo's music accompanied a number of underground films in the late '70s and early '80s. Built from assorted instruments and sounding organic in composition, his music is approached with careful precision and purpose. A similar feeling imbued Gallo's 2001 album of ballads, When. Recordings of Music for Film is truth in advertising, plain and simple. The 29 pieces were compiled from Gallo's recordings for the films The Way It Is, Buffalo '66, Downtown '81, and If You Feel Foggy, Jump. The films, independent and obscure, have mostly never seen any sort of broad distribution and are known primarily to aficionados of the genre. However, the music, thoughtfully sequenced here, stands quite solidly on its own. Short and relatively quiet, the works use a range of primarily acoustic instruments--piano, guitars, percussion, and assorted exotic flavorings. The pieces are studio creations, coming to life via overdubbing, though produced with commendable restraint, allowing the music itself to take center stage at every turn. --David Greenberger

5.0 out of 5 stars Brownies April 30, 2003
Format:Audio CD
This is quite a unique album. To fully appreciate the songs, it definitely helps to be aware of the context for which the music was written. Vincent includes amusing sleeve notes to inform us of where he was in life at the time of each song's creation, and some of it is pretty damn funny. Gallo is a unique personality, therefore, his music is a direct reflection of that.
Each track evokes a mood, correlating to whatever scene it was written for. Gallo had a passion for collecting instruments, and there is a wide diversity of sound throughout the disc. Come to think of it, I believe his voice is only heard on one or two tracks. The album is very ambient, very delicate; I hope to someday have the opportunity to watch some of the films the music was made for.

5.0 out of 5 stars Vincent Gallo, musical genius December 26, 2003

Some people, and most critics, are biased when it comes to analyzing art. The art should stand on its own, regardless of the ideology or eccentricities of the artist.
Vincent Gallo can be offensive to some people. His style of speech, his prose, even his appearance, can affect those who can't accept people who are "different" - ironically, critics should be open-minded, but seldom are. Especially Roger Ebert.
"Recordings of Music for Film" is another creation/compilation from actor/director/writer/artist/architect/producer/blah/blah/blah, Vincent Gallo. Let's face it folks, the guy is an artistic genius, whether you like him or not.
This particular album is a compilation of various tunes that he has written and performed for various films, both his own and others'. His music, for those who are unfamiliar, is very simple and beautiful - though probably not for everyone. He uses a variety of instruments to create moods. Melancholy seems to be a familiar feeling for Mr. Gallo, judging by his music - and melancholy he has perfected.
Besides the great variety of music on this album, there is also a fantastic essay included, written by Gallo himself. This bit is entertaining to say the least, as he names names and gives some shockingly honest opinions. My rating is based on overall value, which is superb.
I highly recommend this CD on the grounds that it will enhance anyone's music collection - but, only buy it if you have wide musical taste. Don't buy it if you're looking for Top 40 type music!

5.0 out of 5 stars Recordings of Music for Film December 7, 2004
Format:Audio CD
I purchased Vincent Gallo's "When" recording first and have not stopped listing to it for months. The purchase of "Recordings of Music for Film" was natural, though I had no idea what it would be like. Again, on this recording Vincent Gallo's music is touching, beautiful and very original. The "When" record is still my all time favorite piece of music but "Recordings of Music for Film" is becoming a close second.
