Karl Krueger was an estimable American conductor and tireless advocate of overlooked late-romantic American symphonic music. To further this cause, he established the Society for the Preservation of the American Musical Heritage in 1958. Feeling that audiences could discover how good this music is only by becoming familiar with it and that the only way to so was through recordings, he made a determined effort to offer an LP catalog of this repertory. Although he initiated this project while he was music director of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, he chose the Royal Philharmonic of London for economic as well as artistic reasons. The Royal was a skilled, well-practiced recording orchestra available for a low price. The project was being financed by a Michigan chemical company, and the records were offered on a subscription basis. Perhaps because Krueger took advantage of this opportunity by re-recording LP issues he was dissatisfied with after they had been sent out to subscribers and then replacing them at considerable expense, support was withdrawn before many of the works planned could be recorded. Without funds to continue the project, Krueger donated the original tapes to the Library of Congress, which eventually brought them out on their own CD label. When the small supply of discs ran out, the music became unavailable to the public. Bridge Records, however, saved the day by releasing many of these analog discs on CD. This set of three CDs is part of Bridge's re-issue, and a wonderful bargain it is!.

Most of the music here reflects the influence of the Austro-German style favored in America until World War I. The composers represented here finished their musical education in Germany or Austria. After the war, they finished it in Paris. If you like this musical period as much as I do, you can't go wrong with this set, which is beautifully played and well recorded.
