This review is from: Recoton Fiber Optic Toslink to 3.5mm Mini Adapter (Electronics)
This product does exactly what I needed it to do. In my Macbook Pro it efficiently (with no sound distortion) transfers the laptops optical signal through my regular toslink cable into my surround sound receiver.
Works great, quality sound.

If you have the Audigy 2 ZS Notebook sound card, you need this for optical audio, one for input and one for output. You can't find this anywhere else, I'm serious. Bestbuy and Radioshack dont have them. This took me a while to figure out.

Great for my Mac Mini,

I use this for my Mac Mini with the digital out. Works great hooked up to a stereo receiver with awesome, clear sound. The only downside to using on a Mac, it disables the internal sound volume controls when a digital out adapter/cable is plugged in. You'll have to control the volume from the receiver all the time. Not a huge problem.

Used to connect the "mini spdif" plug on my HP Pavillion dv 6400 to the optical Super CD toslink [...] input on my Sony STP-k9900p home theatre system (Dolby 5.1). Mini refers to the speaker jack size (like the green speaker plug for any PC). SPDIF refers to the protocol used over the optical connection. Using Amazon's select similar or related search (or whatever it's called) I also bought two 12 foot cables (cables4less) and a toslink to toslink cable connector. 3 separate suppliers, one purchase from Amazon - how neat. I ended up with a 24 foot connection from laptop to home theatre system that reaches every seat in the living room. AND IT WORKS and SOUNDS GREAT. You should hear how good even Pandora.com sounds! I don't mind paying $5-$6 for parts and $20+ for S&H for something I can't buy locally. I got what I wanted. Also, at many places you'll pay $30+ for just one 12 foot cable. All three packages were shipped promptly and arrived within 1 week. (Good job Amazon). The jack, connector and cablesare all top quality. Cable ends have protective caps attached to the ends to keep the optical end clean. The cap for the laptop end reaches to cover the mini spdif plug when it is not in the laptop.

Inexpensive option for hooking up your Macbook to surround sound,

I'm going to keep this simple. With one of these adapters, a toslink cable and a Optical cable switchbox (like 15.00, if that) I can hook up my MacBook to surround sound with ease. Every laptop is different although the late model Mac's have a built in mini-optical out in the headphone jacks so it is literally plug and play. Pair this with the Mini-DVI to HDMI cable and you can hook up your laptop to your television and still have full surround sound. For a 40.00 investment (w/ shipping) , you are literally enhancing your computing experience.

Seriously, these things aren't easy to find. Amazon has them at a good price and you'll need it if you have a MacBook Pro or any other Mac with an optical in/out capability. I'd also recommend that you'd buy MORE than one, as they're not the hardest things to lose.
I bought three just in case, and I have a feeling that I might need more... :D Amazon made it super easy to find, by the way.

I needed this item to connect my X-Fi Sound Blaster card to our 7.1 surround sound system. The adapter has good fit with the cable and input device. Quality is excellent and shipping for this particular seller was quick. BTW, you can't get this at Fry's, Radio Shack, Best Buy, Circuit City, or any other national retailers.

I purchased 4 of these adapters (3 extra) so I could hook up my macbook's digital output for digital surround sound through my Logitech speakers. The product works exactly as I expected... great digital sound from my macbook. Parts Express did an excellent job of getting my order to me sooner than I expected (ordered on a Saturday, and they had the package to the courier by Saturday night.) Very prompt service... I would definitely order from them again. Overall a great product from a prompt company!

These adapters work with new Apple computers that have combination optical/Analog jacks, (My new Mac Pro for example) Powermacs and MacPro towers have seperate analog and toslink, but IIRC everything else in the Apple lineup uses combo minijacks.
Certain other equipment uses the same optical/analog minijacks, like MiniDisc players

Perfect; if it's what you need,

If this is what you need, then it's the perfect solution. I thought it might be helpful to provide some details of what my need was and how these little items fulfilled it. I searched reviews looking for someone that tried what I was looking to do with these, but didn't see any so maybe this will help someone in the same boat I was in.
I purchased and installed an Apple AirPort Express for the sole purpose of streaming iTunes to my A\V Receiver. I am replacing a clunky HTPC that has proven just to difficult for my family to operate. While I'm not a fan of iTunes, there's just no (easy) way around it when everyone in your house owns some flavor of iPod. Anywho, the goal was to go digital from the AirPort to the A\V Receiver. Mistakenly, I purchased a Digital Coax cable to use with the product, only discovering later that (apparently) the AirPort supports only Digital Optical. I already had the Digital Optical cable with Toslink connectors on both ends. Obviously, the AirPort requires a Mini connection. I hated to shell out the $20-$30 for a Toslink-to-Mini cable, so I searched and found these converters. I bought four of them (in an attempt to help justify the shipping to myself). I was concerned about the proper fit on the Mini connection after reading some the reviews, but decided to take a chance. I'm happy to report that they fit perfectly on both ends and everything is working wonderfully. They did arrive with a protective cover over the Mini Optical plug. They were packaged in a bubble wrap envelope, but nothing appeared to be damaged. If this is what you are looking to do and you already have a cable then I think this product will fit your needs perfectly. |
