The band got its name from the title of a book of short stories by Zenna Henderson. In the title story, a tale is weaved about a little girl from a troubled home. This character sees the world as she wishes it could be when she cups her hands. Her obsession almost consumes her. Coming from the harsh city of Paterson, New Jersey, Claude S. felt that the music was his only escape from the ghetto, and it was the resulting melodies that created Anything Box into a group. By writing music, Claude escaped a world where drugs were dealt outside his kitchen window, where prostitutes roamed the streets, and garbage flew into your face as the winter forced you indoors. The isolation made him write songs to make people trancsend the cruelty of the everyday by offering up hope and love, like his heroes, The Beatles. Also, Kraftwerk made their way into the fold, as did The Kinks, The Who, Pink Floyd, New Order, Nirvana, and The Beastie Boys.
California promised a blue sea and sunny skies. The move also created what many consider the most unknown famous band in the world. To this day, after eight albums and a slew of singles on one major and two independents, Anything Box remains deeply rooted in the underground. Although people from all walks of life agree that they could become one of the most important bands in the world, they stay aloof towards an industry they do not agree with. The music always comes first, as does their fans. They dont shun the media, the media is shy of them. They dont deplore MTV, they havent made many videos. They dont fight Napster. They advocate the use of the internet. What Anything Box is capable of has yet to reach its peak. For a band to have played to a crowd of nearly 70,000 people in Brazil and still have a blue collar home ethic is indearing, and they relish in it. At the same time, one must ask the question "Why havent I heard of this band?" Maybe you have. And if you havent, its about time you did. Because no matter what, they exist.

Very Mature..........,

This review is from: Recovered: 1993-1995 (Audio CD)
I love Anything Box. The first three albums are just perfect in every way possible. This album shows the darker and sad side of Claude S. I think that its great. The album will not make you get up and dance, but will make you think about life. It shows a mature side of Claude S. This is a album where things started to change as far as music goes for Anything Box. Although, the new experimental sound of Anything Box really kicks in on the 1997 realease of "Electrodelica", this album shows that the band is starting to evolve into a different sound. Although I was not trilled about the sound that Claude S. was going for on "Electrodelica", I do love this album. The songs on "Recovered" are songs that were recovered due to damage to the sound machine. These are all wonderfull songs that any Anything Box fan must have. This is the last album before the new sound.

A great introduction to Anything Box,
This review is from: Recovered: 1993-1995 (Audio CD)
I am a new fan to Anything Box. A friend of mine introduced me to the California band not long ago with their Future Past EP, and now recently with Recovered. I have been listening to Recovered non-stop. For a band that came about in the '90s they have a very distinctive retro '80s synthpop sound that does not sound remotely dated one bit. Erasure, Pet Shop Boys, Book of Love, and early Depeche Mode automatically pops in my head when I listen to Recovered. One of the songs on the album that really stands out with me is the beautiful ballad "The Teardrop Collector". I found the combination of the thoughtful lyrics and lush melodies irresistible. I also really enjoyed "The Great Divide" and "Sunday". Both of those songs have really strong pop hooks. The more I listen to Recovered the more excited I get when I see them next month in Minneapolis at Ground Zero on September 11.
