Book Description

October 13, 2008
Recovering Me, Discovering Joy is a stunningly honest book of creative non-fiction about how setbacks can be inspirational and the positive nature of life s problems. The book is based on the notion that pain is inevitable but suffering is optional depending on the choices we make during difficult times. It is about the journey to know oneself and covers issues such as depression, social phobia, and alcoholism which Vivian has struggled with but continues to conquer. This book raises awareness about the strong correlation between chronic low-grade depression (dysthymia), social anxiety and alcoholism. Social anxiety is the third leading mental illness in the United States today yet little is written about it, leaving it misunderstood. Social anxiety is an overlooked disorder, often left undiagnosed and can lead to alcoholism. With irresistible honesty, Vivian relates how she could not achieve lasting sobriety until her depression and social phobia were treated. The segment of the population 85 and over is the fastest growing demographic group in the United States today. Recovery becomes more difficult as our bodies age and Vivian discusses positive ways to navigate the aging process. Recovering Me, Discovering Joy offers creative ways to live better even in our advancing years. By using stories from people in recovery, examples of her husband s recovery from a massive stroke and other personal reflections, Vivian emphasizes how faith can enrich our daily lives. By paraphrasing the wit and wisdom of many, Recovering Me, Discovering Joy suggests ways to improve one s life, make it purposeful while enjoying the journey. Brimming with levity, this captivating book demonstrates that by having a life plan and by continual reference and adherence to it, we can live a more meaningful life, one filled with joy. Recovering Me, Discovering Joy is unique in that it addresses difficult subjects with a sense of humor and an uplifting spirit of gratitude. It offers a fresh look at enduring truths which we all tend to forget in our day-to-day fast-paced lives. Alcoholism continues to be the scourge of society. Since the 1960 s, the per capita depression rate has increased ten fold. Today there are effective treatments for social anxiety (a success rate of 90%!) but the majority of cases go undiagnosed. All these diverse yet interconnected issues are addressed and solutions given in this unparalleled book.

About the Author

Vivian has been an inspirational speaker, mentor and writer since 1996. Using her experience, strength and hope, she is committed to helping educate and enlighten the general public about the puzzling aspects of the addiction/recovery process and the strong correlation between anxiety, depression and alcoholism. She holds a marketing degree in Business Administration (magna cum laude), and a certificate in Gerontology. In addition to Recovering Me, Discovering Joy, her published works include articles for The Chicken Soup for the Soul series, Woman s World, Viewpoint, and JUST FINE: Unmasking Depression and Anxiety Disorders (release date 2009). She has also completed a 250-page novel entitled Double Vision. Double Vision is a fast-paced suspense in which addiction and recovery are integral issues. After numerous failed attempts at sobriety and the shame and demoralization that accompanied every relapse, she felt at times that she would never reverse her downward spiral. Only after her chronic low grade depression (dysthymia) and social anxiety were treated could she finally attain long term sobriety. Realizing the profound connection between social anxiety, depression and alcoholism, she felt compelled to write about her recovery in order to raise awareness of the strong correlation between these life-threatening diseases. Recovering Me, Discovering Joy chronicles the struggles she encountered as she climbed from the trenches of despair to discover new and ever-unfolding joy. Her progress in the physical, mental, emotional and spiritual areas of her life has led her to better appreciate and communicate the limitlessness of recovery. Mother to one daughter, Kim, and one son, Todd; Vivian makes her home in San Diego, California with her husband, a dog and a cat. In 1993, her husband suffered a massive stroke leaving him paralyzed on one side, and unable to talk or eat. Today, he has recovered most of his capabilities and is grateful for all life holds for him. He is active in community volunteer work and his recovery is an inspiration to all who know him. Personal stories related to her husband s recovery are also chronicled in Recovering Me, Discovering Joy. Vivian loves to read, write, travel, take long walks, and volunteer in her local communities. She has been a regular speaker at The McDonald Center for over twelve years and has also given talks at Pamarro and The Aurora Behavioral Institute among others. She is involved with Junior Achievement, the San Diego Heart Walk, the 2005 3-Day Breast Cancer Walk and has been featured in Momentum magazine. Her memberships include NCHIC (a speaker s organization for hospitals and institutions), Publishers & Writers of San Diego (PWSD), PMA, the Independent Book Publishers Association and Kappa Alpha Theta.

An Amazing Story of Recovery October 22, 2008
Format:Paperback
"Recovering Me - Discovering Joy" is a poignant and honest look at the devastating consequences of "living" with an undiagnosed social anxiety disorder. Vivian spills the beans on this little understood malady by courageously sharing her journey.
In doing so, she gives those struggling with similar issues hope, information, solutions...and a comforting sense that we are not alone.

During her struggles with alcoholism and undiagnosed Social Anxiety Disorder, Vivian Eisenecher discovered a grounding force in spirituality. In Recovering Me, Discovering Joy, Eisenecher recounts the events and influences that led to her institutional confinement and 12-step recovery, along with the revelations she made along the way. The book is written in the tone of the wisened and reformed addict, on a path of continual self-actualization. She includes the story of her husband's own rehabilitation after experiencing a massive stroke, because the devastation and subsequent stages of grieving and acceptance required a similar vein of recovery.

Much of Eisenecher's philosophy is derived from her own personal type of cognitive therapy. While there are references to compounded events and hereditary psychological disorders that might have prompted her addiction to alcohol, the author chooses to focus on the proactive changes she has made in her daily life, primarily in her general approach. Gratitude and acceptance are key themes to her success with sobriety. She encourages learning to roll with the punches and looking for the underlying positive aspect in every tragedy.

Recovering Me, Discovering Joy is an uplifting book, even in the moments Eisenecher is reliving personal struggles. It is obvious the author has been able to reform her way of thinking, in that she manages to narrate misfortune with an air of accomplishment. She is able to stand back and objectively recount some pretty grim details, recognizing the role of disappointment in her learning process. Eisenecher writes with confidence, which is not a character trait that comes naturally for her. This is indicative of her level of realization.

And yet, the book is not about Vivian Eisenecher. It is about every person who struggles with negativity and loss. It speaks to the millions of Americans with psychological disorders and those experiencing substance abuse problems. Eisenecher relates easily to the reader, delivering a sense of peace and strength. By following her lead, readers can begin to take control of their lives and build positive relationships.

Recovering Me, Discovering Joy has earned a place among inspirational guides. Vivian Eisenecher has created an important tool for victims of chemical dependency. It is one to keep on hand and refer to during difficult times, or to reaffirm direction.
