Best Medical Novel,

This review is from: The Recovery (Paperback)
This is a great medical novel. It is written with a sense of reality. The characters are easily visualized. It not only portrays the consequences of addiction, but also offers hope for recovery. I highly recommend it. It is a book that is hard to leave once it is opened.

An ace of a book!,

Dr. Haberman hit a forehand winner with his debut book "The Recovery" starring Dr. Jere Graf. I initially bought this book for my tennis-crazed son-in-law Mike "Boomstick" Johanson thinking it was a in-depth story about the little-known ex-husband of tennis great Steffi Graf, Dr. Jeremy Graf. Unfortunately, Mike's strict mormon upbringing made him stop reading when Dr. Jere (in a booze-fueled haze) entered in a 24-hour congo line. One can only wonder what bottomless fount of creative genius Rex utilizes to create these unbelievably life-like characters.I give this book 4 stars, a terrific read!

Outstanding debut novel!,

The Recovery is a fast paced novel depicting the fallibility of an orthopedic surgeon. I was shown the real side of chemical dependency and how the damage can be to everyone the addict comes in contact with. The novel also shows that despite appearances, a doctor is subject to lots of difficulties, everything from nutty in-laws to low self-esteem. I was drawn into Jeremy Graf's life. The characters and the plot make this a book worth recommending.

The strength of The Recovery lies in the plot...it is an interesting story with well-developed and interesting characters that really drew me in. I found myself thinking about the characters and caring about what happened to them. Why didn't I give the book 5 stars--I'd probably have given it four and a half if I could--it was a very enjoyable read. It lost a half star with me because of some of the language. Especially at the beginning, the author uses some complicated words (think SAT preparation) and my personal preference is to keep things simple. Still, it was an easy, comfortable read and other readers may not find the word use 0ff-putting. Also, I'm a tough critic... So, check it out. The author is himself a surgeon, and this makes his perspective in a medical novel much more compelling than the usual.

I've live with and around alcoholics and find it hard to believe that he never slips up...also the writer is very wordy...should have been edited down a bit...too many adjectives! The story is a good one but could have been better.

Descriptive and engaging- a very enjoyable read. Haberman is a great storyteller and weaves surprising twists and laugh out loud lines into a fast paced and provocative tale. Through detail in character and visual development, the reader is highly involved and moves through the story with strong images and emotions (and keen insight into the world of surgery!). I'd like to see more from this author. Get a copy and enjoy.
