Often the first thing the newcomer to a recovery program notices are the slogans. Beginning with a few phrases that often hang on the walls of the meeting room--"One Day at a Time," or "Easy Does It"--these timeless pieces of wit and wisdom have grown into a large set of useful tools that come in handy often during recovery. Some of us considered the slogans too simplistic, especially when we first entered the program. Soon, however, many of us found they are lifesavers, especially when confronted with a drink or thoughts about drinking.
Recovery Wisdom is our first attempt to collect these slogans. We hear slogans, catch phrases and acronyms used all the time, but our understanding of each one often comes with one fundamental awakening. We who thought we were above it all, perhaps were not. There comes a time when one phrase we heard over and over suddenly clicks in a situation where we were baffled as to what to do next, and it takes on a new meaning for us. What is at the start often considered simplistic or even banal turns out to be a life-saver, when one slogan centers us and saves our sobriety. Even when the situation is not so drastic, slogans can help the beginner and the "old-timer" over those bumps in the road of sobriety.
