Book Description

Recreative Minds develops a philosophical theory of imagination that draws upon the latest work in psychology. This theory illuminates the use of imagination in coming to terms with art, its role in enabling us to live as social beings, and the psychological consequences of disordered imagination. The authors offer a lucid exploration of a fascinating subject.

Editorial Reviews

Review

`This book presents a theory of what the authors call recreative imagination-the ability to recreate in our minds counterparts of other mental states. An account is offered of both the functions and dysfunctions of many of our mental capacities, and a philosophical framework is suggested for making sense of relevant findings in cognitive psychology. Throughout the book, the writing is clear, the examples are well chosen, and a powerful picture of a whole range of phenomena is built up. There has been little attempt in recent years to develop a unified theory of the imagination, and Currie and Ravenscroft are to be congratulated for both the originality of their vision and the detailed execution of their project. . . . [they] have done an excellent job in offering such a clear view of the territory with so many insights in the process. Their ideas and arguments deserve to be recreated in the minds of all those interested in imagination.'' Michael Beaney, Philosophical Books
