This book made me laugh out loud, and keep on laughing, in several places. Already that is rare.

But I also really appreciated being in on adventure I would never take myself. It is staggering to considering non-athletes about my age flying with bicycles to New York City and riding them, with a deadline, to Oregon. I was so interested in what they ran across in terms of terrain, people, and accommodations. It was just great to experience it second hand and not have to go through it myself. They did have many difficulties, but the humor kept it aloft.

Sorry I did not like this book. Try it, you may like it.
213 pages and only about 15 pictures. The pictures were long distant shots. Most were tiny 2"x3" in size. All were black and white. The entire book seemed to be about complaints. To hot, to cold, to hilly, bad food, bad motels. Not much about the title of the book "The Recumbent and the Upright".

I am still reading this book, but have thoroughly enjoyed it so far.

The approach is quite refreshing, with the author still not quite sure that anyone would 'really' want to read about a 'couple of gumdrops' riding the ranges across the USA.

But this approach is very effective, and makes for an enjoyable read as Sheryl minimises the effort, and determination, in which she and hubbie attacked the project.

And on the way through, I have been pleased to learn that I would be very happy to meet them, should they ever pedal my way.

I appreciate the ever-so-slightly caustic observations of other people, and equally, the genuine shock and joy displayed when a genuine 'free offer' of help is stumbled upon, and gratefully accepted.

There is a job for both riders, in travelling the USA and encouraging other 'gumdrops' to bin their pills and gym memberships, and take up cycling.

A 'million gumdrops' ride (should it be east-west or west-east?) across the star-spangled nation is called for.

Wow, I sure liked this book. It's a great touring book of 2 who got off the beaten bike track and did things their own unique way. I sure enjoyed it. Nice story of a recumbent.
