RED 13 - Stripped down and rockin', November 26, 2002
This review is from: Red 13 (Audio CD)
This EP is definitely not for everyone. The EP was recorded in Jonathan Cain's home studio and was both mixed and produced by Jonathan and Neal Schon. This is not the flawless production of past records, nor is it meant to be. This is raw, raunchy, and as far as Journey goes in your face. There are no silky background vocals, there are no big hooks, this has the energy of Journey LIVE. That said, the songs are still well crafted and the lyrics top notch. A beautiful ballad 'Walking Away From The Edge' is sandwiched between the rockers and many will find this the best song on the EP. Steve Augeri sings some real emotion into this track and any fans of Neal's Higher Octave solo work will appreciate the guitar work here.
I for one think this EP is fantastic. I only wish they would have added the songs not released on Arrival and made a full CD. I do wish the production/mix was a little better and now that they redid the cover art, which looks great, those are the only two issues I have with the EP.

A return of sorts..., December 5, 2002
This review is from: Red 13 (Audio CD)
Red 13 is more edgy and intense than Arrival, and if you appreciate Neal Schon you will enjoy this. It's obvious that Journey has taken a direction away from the *almost* pop-type songs from Escape and Frontiers and has gone more toward the album-oriented forays of their beginnings. Almost reminds me a little bit of Rush. Very enjoyable offering, the only lack is that there isn't more of it!

A rocking departure, July 10, 2006
This review is from: Red 13 (Audio CD)
I can see how people, especially longtime Journey fans, could have a problem with the Red 13 EP. It's definitely a step away from Journey's larger than life AOR sound, and it's virtually impossible to imagine Steve Perry agreeing to sing anything other than the ballad "Walkin' Away From the Edge". Then again, maybe that was the point.
The rest of the songs on Red 13 have a more rocking, almost progressive feel, which obviously suits Neal Schon just fine. He really gets a chance to exercise his considerable talent here. Steve Augeri (aka the New Guy), who performed so admirably on
Arrival, doesn't really get a chance to shine on this EP. "Walking Away From the Edge" was the only song where his performance was up front and dynamic. The rest of the tracks have him taking a back seat to the rest of the band, who use the opportunity to rock out a bit more than we're used to hearing.
I enjoyed this EP. It was a great showcase for the musicians in Journey, and a statement of what they are capable of when the pressure to write radio-friendly hits is taken away.
It may not be the typical Journey release, but Red 13 is enjoyable for what it is - a rocking, 24-minute, temporary departure from Journey's signature sound.
