This EP is definitely not for everyone. The EP was recorded in Jonathan Cain's home studio and was both mixed and produced by Jonathan and Neal Schon. This is not the flawless production of past records, nor is it meant to be. This is raw, raunchy, and as far as Journey goes in your face. 3.0 out of 5 stars Change of pace
Nice little EP put out by Journey while searching for a record label. No classics here but a nice change of pace from the usual Journey release. "State of Grace" and "I Can Breathe" are the best. "Walking Away From the Edge" is a different and better ballad than what Journey has been accustomed to.

There are no silky background vocals, there are no big hooks, this has the energy of Journey LIVE. That said, the songs are still well crafted and the lyrics top notch. A beautiful ballad 'Walking Away From The Edge' is sandwiched between the rockers and many will find this the best song on the EP. Steve Augeri sings some real emotion into this track and any fans of Neal's Higher Octave solo work will appreciate the guitar work here.

I for one think this EP is fantastic. I only wish they would have added the songs not released on Arrival and made a full CD. I do wish the production/mix was a little better and now that they redid the cover art, which looks great, those are the only two issues I have with the EP.

5.0 out of 5 stars A return of sorts..., December 5, 2002

Red 13 is more edgy and intense than Arrival, and if you appreciate Neal Schon you will enjoy this. It's obvious that Journey has taken a direction away from the *almost* pop-type songs from Escape and Frontiers and has gone more toward the album-oriented forays of their beginnings. Almost reminds me a little bit of Rush. Very enjoyable offering, the only lack is that there isn't more of it!

4.0 out of 5 stars A rocking departure, July 10, 2006
This review is from: Red 13 (Audio CD)
I can see how people, especially longtime Journey fans, could have a problem with the Red 13 EP. It's definitely a step away from Journey's larger than life AOR sound, and it's virtually impossible to imagine Steve Perry agreeing to sing anything other than the ballad "Walkin' Away From the Edge". Then again, maybe that was the point.

The rest of the songs on Red 13 have a more rocking, almost progressive feel, which obviously suits Neal Schon just fine. He really gets a chance to exercise his considerable talent here. Steve Augeri (aka the New Guy), who performed so admirably on Arrival, doesn't really get a chance to shine on this EP. "Walking Away From the Edge" was the only song where his performance was up front and dynamic. The rest of the tracks have him taking a back seat to the rest of the band, who use the opportunity to rock out a bit more than we're used to hearing.

I enjoyed this EP. It was a great showcase for the musicians in Journey, and a statement of what they are capable of when the pressure to write radio-friendly hits is taken away.

It may not be the typical Journey release, but Red 13 is enjoyable for what it is - a rocking, 24-minute, temporary departure from Journey's signature sound.

5.0 out of 5 stars Thank you! Steve Augeri for bringing Journey into the future, March 28, 2004

I really wish people would stop bashing Steve Augeri, and give this guy a chance,he deserves it. Steve Augeri is NOT Steve Perry nor he ever will be. (thank god for thát!!!!)I was blown away by Steve Augeri's performance on the Journey 2001 DVD. Whát a voice!!!!! I'm even more impressed hearing the Red 13 EP. "State of Grace", "The time" are really standing out. Well,....there isn't a bad song on it. There's one downside though,...it contains only 4 tracks! I really hope that the fans of the old Journey(and Steve Perry) give this 'new' Journey ánd Steve Augeri a chance.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great EP!, November 28, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Red 13 (Audio CD)
The legendary rockers have returned with this 4 song EP. You'll love Neal Schon's intro into State Of Grace. Feel the warmth of Steve Augeri's voice on Walking Away From the Edge. The song entitled "The Time" was recently played at their last show in Reno Nevada on November 23rd (I was there!)and quite simply got the audience to their feet! You'll love this cd!! I know I do!

5.0 out of 5 stars Totally fresh, totally Journey!, November 28, 2002

What could I say, this EP is great! I first heard the songs in concert and was totally blown away by the musicianship.

This is not what you expect from Journey; they've finally grabbed the reins and rocked out. "State of Grace" and "The Time" are catchy tunes, the kind you want to blast in your car. "Walkin' Away from the Edge" is the standard ballad, however, it's the most powerful one Journey's put out yet. "I Can Breathe" will remind you more of Journey's older material.

Steve Augeri's amazing, and this EP shows his vocal abilities. HE DOES NOT SOUND LIKE STEVE PERRY!

If this is any indication of what Journey's going to put out in the future... then wow...

4.0 out of 5 stars New Journey, November 27, 2002
By
This review is from: Red 13 (Audio CD)
This is new Journey!! Here's my review of the album from JourneyJosh.

State of Grace is a pure rock song from the band, and also shows
the band's new direction. It starts with a heavy guitar solo by
Jon and Neal, with strong rhythms by Deen and Ross. Steve comes in
strong, and the band quickly picks up the level of rock. Basically
put, combine Separate Ways and Be Good to Yourself and Wheel in
the Sky minus the piano and keyboards, and you have State of
Grace. At 7:28 seconds in length, it's obvious that Journey
had fun with this one.

The Time is the second track of RED 13, and is also one of
the new songs written for the album. This is a very heavy
rock song, and VERY guitar driven. Jonathan is on guitar
here, as in State of Grace, and keeps a steady rhythm going
throughout the entire song. Ross and Deen seem to have fun
with this one, and they are the factors that really make the
song. Neal comes in all over the place with guitar solos,
some lighter, and some blistering. Steve Augeri comes in
with a much laid back voice and also sort of a bluesy
feeling. If you combine heavy rock with blues, you get this
song. The song is perfectly in Augeri's vocal range, so he
sounds exceptional.

Walking Away From the Edge is the only ballad on the entire album
It is more in line with older Journey, so it serves as a break
from the new material with some older sounding material. It's a
very slow song. After the band starts, Steve comes in solumnly and
with more emotion than I've ever heard from the man while he's
singing. Neal has an incredible solo at the end that lasts for two
minutes, but leaves you with a sense of waiting for what tomorrow
will bring. A beautiful song in almost every way.

The final song on the album is a song with a Raised on
Radio feel to it. It also serves as a recovery from the
emotional Walking Away From the Edge. An upbeat tune,
I Can Breathe is another Arrival cut. This is the shortest track,
the only one under 6 minutes in length! Musically and lyrically,
it almost belongs on the Raised on Radio album. A great tune to
end the album.

OVERVIEW - This is my review of the album. Running at 24:28, it is
a long CD for an EP. Journey's new musical direction is very
present throughout the album, and it seems to ask the fans
if they think that it is something they will follow or not.
Musically, it is Journey, new and old. Lyrically, the album
lacks the polishness of all the older Journey records, with
Walking Away From The Edge being the only exception. A good
album for all Journey fans, and an excellent effort by the
band that, thirty years on, is still true to its fans.

5.0 out of 5 stars Left me wanting more., July 10, 2004

Like the reviewer below me, I own a lot of CDs and this has to be the only EP I purchased. I'm so glad I did too.

This CD has four tracks(Not including the 2 minute intro). Three out of the four thump with rock. My favorites, even though there's only four tracks, would have to be "State of Grace" and "I Can Breathe".

"The Time" is a good song, but I find myself sometimes skipping to past the ending. Although a good song, it's my least favorite of the four.

"Walking Away From the Edge" is the only ballad on the CD and it's a great song. I really like Steve Augeri's vocals in the CD.

For only $8.98, this CD is definetly worth a shot from old and new Journey fans.

I have been a Journey fan since 1980. The classics are still some of the greatest songs still around but, this new cd, Red 13, with the voice of Steve Augeri is amazing. His own unique sound and the soul he puts into this ep is truly awesome. Walking Away from the Edge and State of Grace are my 2 favorites. This cd shows that they still have what it takes to be a great classic rock band. And if you are looking for more rock and roll, it has that also. You won't be disappointed in this one.

If you think Journey is just another 80's band trying to make a come back ... you are dead wrong! They don't need to "make" a come back ... they ARE back ... LOUDER than ever with this amazing EP. Walking Away From the Edge is a great power ballad while The Time, State of Grace and I Can Breathe are kicks[s], packed with Neal Schon's guitar licks, Steve Augeri's amazing voice, Jon Cain tickling the ivories, Ross Valory laying a deep groove and Deen Castronovo beatin' the skins like there is no tomorrow. If you want to hear some GREAT new music this is the EP to buy! Be sure to catch them on tour next year! It is a show you DON'T want to miss!!
