Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

The premise of Harper's grisly thriller is so derivative it's almost amusing: a hero with a troubled past must catch a vicious serial killer, but to do so, he has to enlist the help of an equally vicious, insane genius currently being held in a maximum security prison. (Fava beans, anyone?) Despite the obvious debt to Thomas Harris, the book is enjoyable in its own right, largely thanks to a pair of likable protagonists: Trey Campbell, a corrections officer who has just returned to the job after a harrowing experience with a female inmate (a story told in Harper's previous book, Bad Karma), and Jane Laymon, a rookie police officer whose current case focuses on the Red Angel, a killer who ties bird wings to his young victims. Campbell discovers the connection between the killer and Michael Scoleri, a ruthless sociopath currently housed in Program 28, the last resort for the inmates at the sprawling Darden State Hospital. Somehow, Scoleri knows what the Angel is doing and who the next victim will be. Harper does what few writers in this genre do: he paints a vivid picture of his physical setting, giving it background and context. The final showdown is perfectly paced, although it leads up to a finale that, again, recalls Silence of the Lambs. Harper is a pseudonym for bestselling horror author Douglas Clegg.

5.0 out of 5 stars Tight suspense and enough gore to keep the this fan happy!, September 15, 2003

I just finished reading Red Angel. It was one heckuva tight read! The pace is great and the action just keeps coming. This book also manages to hold the interest of the reader even when the weapon wielding killer isn't doing his worst. Some of the books that I've read involving the "criminally insane" get so into the psychological aspect of the crimes that the book loses some of its energy. Not so in Red Angel! Andrew Harper just lets the crazies be crazies and the blood flows freely from that point on. I loved this book - can't say enough good about it!

This review is from: Red Angel (Mass Market Paperback)
Andrew Harper (Douglas Clegg's alter ego)returns with a not-inclusive sequel to BAD KARMA with RED ANGEL. The idea behind these books is to craft a fast-paced, character driven story that you can read in 2-3 sittings. And Harper demands that you stay with the story with enough twist and turns to dare you to try and quit reading. The he throws in enough character development to flesh out the main players all the while twisting your stomach with gut wrenching scenes of torture and murder! The plot is straight forward, the climax worthwhile and most importantly, the characters stay true throughout the novel...they don't have a revelation that is "smart" or "cute". This is lean prose by a master writer. I would recommend any of Douglas Clegg's books after you finish this one....the Clegg books are more richly woven tales but RED ANGEL is a showcase of a imaginative writer on top of his craft!
