Editorial Reviews

This mid-'70s LP went Top 5 on the Billboard jazz chart, yet finds the vibraphonist groovin' on soul classics like Ain't No Sunshine and Papa Was a Rollin' Stone . 5000 copies only!

This is probably the most consistent of Ayers' early funk records. It lacks the jazziness of earlier outings (Virgo Vibes, for example, which is among my faves) and isn't as smoothely produced as his later disco records. But the still somewhat raw sound is damn funky.

Also, a nice little treat: the folks at Polydor have produced a delightful limited edition re-release with the styling of the original LP. Cool.

Red, Black and Green became famous for me through samples of it used in hiphop tracks from back in the days. The vinyl album had been long out of print and finally I found this rerelease on CD. Keep in mind that this is a limited edition, since on the back of this CD reissue there's a print that says "Limited Edition" and, in fact, I have number 675/5000. In other words: don't wait any longer. And of course this one is available as 'vinyl rip' all over the net through various 'grey' music sites, but eventually only the real thing matters to me: at the end of the day a large cabinet with superb albums in it has so much more value than a stack of self erasing CD-R discs! Fabulous Roy Ayers classic, crisply and lovely remastered by Suha Gur and a must have. Period.

One of Roy Ayers most popular albums of the early 1970s is this hard-to-find jazz fusion program of great music and rhythms highlighted by Ayers' wonderful playing on the vibes. Every cut here is a winner, especially "Ain't No Sunshine" and the lyrical, jaunty "Cocoa Butter". Although the title track is included on Ayers' "Evolution" double CD release, none of the other tracks are available except on this limited edition CD so fans of Roy Ayers Ubiquity and the beautiful sounds of his instrument are advised to grab a copy of this CD post-haste. Highly recommended for the quality of the music content and as a collector's item.

I purchased the LP back in the 70's ( I think) after hearing it being played at a record store in the mall. Then proceeded to wear it out "Poppa Was A Rolling Stone" is my fav.
