More Than a New Installment: An Evolution,
By
This review is from: Red vs Blue: Reconstruction (DVD)
The Red vs. Blue series is famous for its running gags, quick wit, stinging satire, and nonsensical story lines. Lasting six seasons and 100 episodes (plus special videos not related to the main story arc), The Blood Gulch Chronicles was the defining moment for machinima.
Reconstruction changes the essential formula that, in turn, make the series even better than before: - instead of telling the story from the point of view of the RvB soldiers, the outsider Freelancer Agent Washington narrates the story - the style takes risk by blending its signature comedy routines with dark and compelling drama. - science fiction elements are no longer relegated to the category "plot devices." These surprisingly smart elements now propel the plot forward and enhance the emotional impact of the plot. - the cinematography and editing are handled with skill and nuance, giving this product a more polished and traditional presentation as opposed to the uniquely gritty technique that was part of the series' style before. - the soundtrack relies on more orchestral compositions, as opposed to the desert rock/ country solo guitar. - as opposed to leaving story lines unresolved, this story actually cleans up the story and resolves many of the questions lingering from the Blood Gulch Chronicles. Moreover, it is done in a brilliant way that will both shock and amaze fans and new viewers alike. These changes represented a critical evolution in the series, giving this installation an epic scope and a veneer of professional production values. This allows for new elements - the brilliant writing and more traditional plot progression - while retaining what made the Red vs. Blue series great - intelligent humor and satire. This release is a must see for any existing Red vs. Blue fans. While this story will only have limited appeal to new viewers (due to the quantity of inside jokes and important plot points in the original series), Reconstruction nevertheless provides an accessible entry point for new viewers. I highly recommend this DVD for any fan of the series or for anyone looking for a quality science fiction story with a great sense of humor. 5 stars

Red vs Blue is back!!!,
This review is from: Red vs Blue: Reconstruction (DVD)
"A new enemy. A new hero. The same bunch of rejects." Red vs Blue: Reconstruction picks up where Blood Gulch Chronicles (and Recovery One) left off. The dvd contains all nineteen episodes compiled together in the form of a movie (like with previous RvB seasons), with deleted scenes, outtakes, behind-the scenes footage, and a sneak peek at Rooster Teeth's upcoming new series Red vs Blue the Animated Series! This dvd is perfect for longtime fans of RvB as well as newcomers to the series (though it wouldn't hurt to watch the previous seasons first).
"Wow. What a ringing endorsement. I am FILLED with confidence."-Private Leonard Church

The "Big Twist" is a big disappointment,
By
This review is from: Red Vs Blue: Season 6 Reconstruction (DVD)
This series had a LOT going for it. It was fun and exciting and on the whole one of the best of the RVB series; EXCEPT for the big "revelation." I won't ruin it for you, but we discover a critical piece of information about the RVB universe that supposedly explains everything that happened in the Blood Gulch Chronicles. Some of the new information does make sense mind you, but the big "mind-blowing" secret that is revealed leaves even more holes in the plot than it fills.
While this season is more serious than any previous series, it is still very, very funny. You NEED to see it if you are a RVB fan, and the extra stuff on the DVD is awesome too. But be prepared for disappointment here and there, and remember to suspend your disbelief. Even by RVB standards, this season's plot is hard to swallow.
