This tastes like real fish with a rich, almost nutty note (it has an obvious fermented fish smell but it doesn't have the overly aggressive stink of cheap fish sauces) and isn't watery/thin like most fish sauces I've tried. It's not thick, but it it a bit thicker than water. Goes great with Asian dishes for a little zing and also makes a great prik nam pla (mix some with lime juice and freshly cut serranos).

I purchased this product while doing a Whole 30 which requires you to completely leave sugar out of your diet; this was the only brand that met this requirement. The flavor is much better than what I had previously been using! I will continue to purchase this product even when I can eat sugar again :)

This is my favorite fish sauce, by far. My experience and opinion of Red Boat formed in the context of having used other fish sauces in the past, so I'm reviewing this one by comparing it to those.

Tiparos used to be my go-to brand. It has a classic flavor—salty, savory, not subtle, but not strong. It's no accident that so many other brands have names similar to "Tiparos". It was one of the first mass produced brands and is familiar to many people around the world. Its agreeable flavor and value lend it a broad appeal. It works well in a wide variety of uses: as a light seasoning, as the mainstay of a cooked sauce, or as a raw dipping sauce (as in nam prik).

Three Crabs is more pungent than Tiparos. It's good if you want a stronger, more savory flavor. It's not subtle, rather fishy, and maybe overpowering in raw form. It's easily one of the cheapest brands, so you get a lot for your money.

Red Boat reminds me of Tiparos more than Three Crabs, in that it strikes a very nice balance in the strength of its flavor. One the one hand, it's powerful enough to retain plenty of flavor when it's cooked. On the other hand, it's mild enough that it still works really well in raw form. More than either of the other brands, Red Boat has an incredible depth and complexity of flavor. It's highly distinctive. Having entrained my palate to Red Boat, whenever I try another brand, it's never quite as satisfying. This one deserves all the praise it's given. I have absolutely no misgivings about paying more for it.

To conclude, I draw an analogy to wines. Tiparos is like a Merlot—pleasant, medium bodied, highly versatile, but very simple. Three Crabs is like a Malbec—strong, dark, and unforgiving. Red Boat is like a fine Bordeaux—a bouquet of flavors, a medium-to-full body, deserving of appreciation on its own, but getting along splendidly with others.

I've purchased and tried all the best fish sauces (Three Crabs, Squid, Tiparos, etc.) and Red Boat stands out as the best. It's a very smooth, nutty, and clean tasting fish sauce which is a result of the quality of ingredients and manufacturing process.

Outstanding and well worth the price.

For those not willing to shell out for Red Boat, check out Tiparos brand which can be found at your local Asian market. It's not as good as Red Boat (still pretty good) but cost around 20 times less.

EDIT: 12/23/15 update. My local asian mart (Viet Hoa) sells the 17oz bottle of Red Boat for $7.48!

I love using this fish sauce in my Asian cooking. If this is your first time using fish sauce, the smell of can be overwhelming and... well... kind of gross. How can something that smells so bad taste so good? I don't know, but this sure does! I like to use this as called for in a recipe or as a substitute for soy sauce. The saltiness is very similar, but it imparts a slightly different flavor that my family really enjoys. The flavor isn't particularly fishy, though. Most of my family does not like anything that verges on fishy, and they love this sauce.

I also really like the simplicity in the ingredients of this fish sauce: anchovies and sea salt. There really isn't a need to include other ingredients as some other brands do.

If you are looking for a wheat-free, soy-free sauce of Asian deliciousness, this is a great choice.

I use this in every asian dish I make. I use it in the marinade for the pork and the sauce for my bun thit nuong, stirfry sauce, lettuce wraps, fried rice, and even non-asian dishes for that extra umami flavor. It is the best, most authentic fish sauce you can find and it has no added sugar or preservatives, just anchovies and salt. It has a strong smell and a rich, deep, salty flavor (reduce or eliminate other salt in your dish, this is all the salt you need!) and can be overwhelming if tasted alone, but mix a teaspoon or two into stirfry sauce or meat marinades and it's amazing.

If you're on a Paleo diet, you've probably heard of this fish sauce. It claims to be the best fish sauce in the world, and I think it lives up to that billing. I use it in basically everything, but don't tell my family. It doesn't taste fishy (despite the smell) but simply adds a boost of savory flavor.

One warning though. Don't drop the bottle. *shudder*
