5.0 out of 5 stars Tougher than it looks
When I received this butterfly it seemed fragile. I have had it outside for a year now and its held up beautifully. It spins very nicely.

I bought one of these spinners to suspend from a garden gazebo above a bird bath (on a wire about two feet long). It's very pretty out of the box and spins very well. Unfortunately, it's pretty flimsy and I needed some modification to make mine work.

First, it weighs almost nothing, so while it spins fine in a gentle breeze, any strong gusts or winds toss it around like a beach ball (which throws off its spinning). I solved this problem by drilling a hole in the base of the cage and affixing the heaviest cabinet knob I could find at the hardware store as a counterweight. Now it spins beautifully even when the wind is really blowing.

Second, my model has a glass teardrop in the center, which swings and spins freely from the cage. Due to the design of the blades of the cage, this tear drop can swing between two of the blades and then become wedged between them as the rotating blades "sweep" it up. It remains caught until you manually untangle it. On mine, this happened about every ten minutes. I solved this problem by using a small piece of copper wire to affix the "spring" the teardrop sits in to the bottom of the cage (conveniently using the same screw I used to affix the cabinet knob).

With those two problems fixed, it's now a very eye-catching decoration for my backyard and I'm happy with it. It just would have been nice not to have to reinforce it myself.

On an unrelated note, the directions recommend putting a coat of car wax on it once a year if you want to keep it shiny. I put on a couple of coats of clear enamel spray paint instead.

3.0 out of 5 stars Nice, but..., May 29, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This is a nice design, but as other reviewers have stated, it is extremely flimsy. In fact, it is paper thin. I was expecting it to have a little more heft to it. Also, the pop rivets used to hold it together are overly large and detract from the appearance.

So, great design, but poor execution.

5.0 out of 5 stars Outdoor Use Preferable, March 21, 2006

This review is from: Red Carpet Studios Ltd. Cosmix Spinner with Mosaic Butterfly - 14" long (Lawn & Patio)
Our home has a wooden deck that is partly shaded by the eaves under which we hang a variety of outdoor gewgaws and feeders. Although we take great delight from the wind chimes, stained glass ornaments, bird feeders, butterfly feeders, and sundry other tinkling, reflective, and refractive trinkets, we felt something was missing, and that something was the 14'' Mosaic Butterfly Cosmic Wind Spinner.

Out of the box, the Cosmic Wind Spinner was beautiful to behold, its sinewy copper curves streaming around the gossamer wings of an ethereal butterfly. "Delightful!" I exclaimed. I immediately hung it from the screw eye I had previously installed in a place of honor between the Woodstock Percussion TRCBRM Tudor Rose Chimes and the SohoDecor Red Cherries Hummingbird Feeder. As if on cue, a gentle breeze wafted across the garden, kissed my cheeks, and set the Cosmic Wind Spinner twirling and spinning, and indeed, it became a "gallery of motion and beauty."

As I stood transfixed at the Cosmic Wind Spinner, hypnotized by the midmorning sunlight glinting off the swirling copper, I became unsettled at the prospect of a "verdigris patina finish" dulling the shine of the copper. I recalled how the Statue of Liberty, newly arrived from France as a gesture of friendship and goodwill, stood gleaming in New York Harbor, but then after years of exposure to the air and sea water, acquired the muted, verdant hue so familiar to all. While entirely appropriate for a stately and symbolic statue, I did not think a "verdigris patina finish" would necessarily enhance the Cosmic Wind Spinner, so I brought it inside.

Once inside the Cosmic Wind Spinner immediately lost some of its fey bucolicism. "Maybe it needs to spin," I thought, so I inhaled deeply and blew. As the Cosmic Wind Spinner turned and began to regain some of its magical life, my spirits lifted and I took another deep breath and blew again. Rewarded by the dancing movement, I blew more rapidly, laughing as the Cosmic Wind Spinner spun faster and faster. I blew and laughed and blew faster and faster until I passed out.

When I came to, I saw the face of my wife leaning over me. "What are you doing on the floor?" she asked. I explained to her what happened, and she gave me a funny look before telling me, "Maybe you should put the Cosmic Wind Spinner back outside." I nodded my head and did just what she suggested. Now I enjoy the Cosmic Wind Spinner under the influence of Aeolus's breath while saving my own.

5.0 out of 5 stars beautiful but simple to hang in a tree, August 5, 2011

I bought this for my daughter and she put it in a tree in her front yard. It is pretty to watch it twist in the wind and see the colors when the sun hits the colored plastic in the middle.

5.0 out of 5 stars Windy days I hope for...., September 23, 2010
I purchased this spinner to replace an old one that fell apart, this one seems to be better quality and should last longer. I stated hoping for windy days as this spinner is very cool, as it has two rotors that spin opposite directions. The instruction book states that car wax should be used for longer useage and I used ICE wax, very good stuff. I will be taking this down during the winter months, but I will be looking forward to springtime and putting this spinner back up.
