Editorial Reviews

From the Author

This is the second edition of my book on Red Hat intermediate and advanced system administration topics and it is updated to the 6th version of Red Hat Enterprise Linux. I have provided coverage of all the official objectives for both the EX200 and EX300 exams listed on Red Hat's certification website for RHCSA and RHCE. I have also included the step-by-step instructions at the outset on how to install RHEL 6 followed by a detailed review of Linux basics in the next few chapters to lay the foundation for advanced topics. Throughout the writing process, I have tested the commands and scripts presented on RHEL 6.3 running in a virtual environment, and have added tons of exercises, labs, and review questions to reinforce the reading. My emphasis in the book is more on the practical aspect to align with the nature of the Red Hat exams, which are 100% hands-on. I recommend that you have a couple of virtual machines running RHEL 6 by your side while you study this book.

Don't forget to write an honest review to let me and other potential buyers of this book know of what you think about this endeavor.

Good luck!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Good Training Guide, Excellent Reference Manual March 10, 2013
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I bought this title after having toted Jang's RHCSA/RHCE Certification Study Guide around for a couple of years. Jang's book is regarded as the standard when it comes to exam preparation, but for RHEL 5 I found Ghori's previous edition to be more helpful in a number of ways, specifically in its straightforward presentation of material and almost cookbook how-to of different topics. This latest edition, recrafted for RHEL 6, is another good title for reference and exam preparation.

Ghori's approach when assembling this book is clear – present the material in a very direct, understandable and sometimes exhaustive way. Every topic is presented very methodically and has no shortage of explanation attached, whether it's setting up an ftp server or running the ls command. Cases where there isn't enough information are few.

The material is broken down in logical chapters in two groups – RHCSA-specific topics and RHCE-specific topics. In the RHCSA section there are: Local Installation, Basic Linux Commands, Files and Directories, Package Management, Virtualization and Network Installation, Linux Boot Process & Kernel Management, Disk Partitioning, File Systems & Swap, Users & Groups, Firewall & SELinux, and finally Networking/Network Interfaces & DNS/DHCP/LDAP Clients. In the RHCE section there are: Shell Scripting/Building an RPM Package/iSCSI, Advanced Firewall/TCP Wrappers/Usage Reporting & Remote Logging, Routing/Kerberos/DNS Server, Internet Services/Kernel Parameters/NTP, Electronic Mail, Network File System (NFS), Samba & FTP, and finally Apache Web Server (HTTP) & Secure Shell Server (ssh). Every chapter (including chapter one) has a small set of labs and a large number of review questions for practice and exam preparation.

5.0 out of 5 stars This book is the best May 11, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I teach Linux to college students, and have found that this book is the best study guide for certification exams. It goes over the required skills in a step-by-step fashion. I recommend using this book along with Michael Jang's, but if you can only afford one or the other, buy and use this book!

5.0 out of 5 stars This book is really best for linux preparation ! March 4, 2013

I am using this book to prepare for my RHCSA (EX200) exam which I am planning to take soon. So far, I have found this book of great help. I have configured two virtual machines loaded with version 6.3 of RHEL. This book is written in simple English and is well structured. Exam objectives are clearly identified at the beginning of each chapter. I specially like the hands-on exercises that are presented throughout the book in each chapter. I am also attempting to complete the labs after finishing a chapter. I'd give this book a 5-star rating."

5.0 out of 5 stars Passed RHCSA EX200 March 16, 2013
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I just passed the EX200 RHCSA exam. I used this book and the RHCSA/RHCE Red Hat Linux Certification Study Guide (Exams EX200 & EX300), 6th Edition (Certification Press) to study with. The books together repeat a lot of the same stuff, but I still think it's a good idea to have more than one study resource, and reviewing is good.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book for Exam and practical scenario March 9, 2013
By gur
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
This is a great book for those who wish to prepare for the RHCSA EX200 and RHCE EX300 exams. This book has two sections, one that covers all objectives identified on the RHCSA exam objectives list and the other one covers all objectives identified on the RHCE exam objectives list. The RHCSA section has 13 chapters and the RHCE section has 8. Each chapter includes step by step exercises, and provide labs and review questions/answers at the end. This book may be used as a reference material while you are on the job. It provides good material for those who have experience working with other operating systems.

5.0 out of 5 stars Even if you do go for certification... June 27, 2013
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
This is a great book for learning RHEL6 and many things associated with it. The book is easy to follow, flows great and very beneficial, even for an old die-hard Windows Sys Admin.
I had a minor problem with one of the exercises in Chapter 7. I sent an e-mail to Asghar and within the hour, he answered and solved my problem for me.
I highly recommend this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars I am glad that I bought this book April 12, 2013

I been working with linux for about 10 years, this book is very refreshing and I have learned some new tricks and tweaks. Asghor Ghori did a great job instead of telling stories and copying and pasting from the redhat docs, he gave real world examples. I will look forward to any other advance level books he writes on linux.
