Book Description

1972

The wily, intelligent Red Fox takes on the Canadian wilderness in this classic novel by Charles G. D. Roberts. He tangles with numerous foes, including bear, goshawk, lynx, skunk and owl. Red Fox (with kits and mate) flees a major fire and has several encounters with hounds and men. In this 1905 novel G. D. Roberts set out to make Red Fox and the animal world around him more understandable to his readers, and to encourage awareness of the cruelty involved in humanity's relationship to wild animals.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fox fans will love this classic!, December 6, 2001
This review is from: Red Fox (Hardcover)
This is an excellent, fully-illustrated, turn-of-the-century tale about the adventure of a brave fox seeking sanctuary from the hunters and dogs. I have a very old copy that I found at an antique store. If you liked "The Fox and the Hound", "Foxes of Firstdark", "The Running Foxes" or "Biography of a Silver Fox", then you will like this book, I'm sure! (...)

5.0 out of 5 stars An Undiscovered Book, filled with amazing descriptions!, February 21, 2009
This book is a true wonder! The colorful descriptions of the wilderness and its inhabitants are a dream to the seeker of an original, classic gem. I honestly couldn't put this book down, and when I did, I went straight to my PC and looked up other animal/adventure stories from Charles G. D. Roberts. As I had bought others then from him, I was firmly convinced that this author is a rare exception to this genre. You will definitely not be disappointed!

As you read, your imagination stirs up fantastic images (thanks to the resplendent description of nature, of smells, of sounds, feelings within the animals and of course the vibrant surroundings. There are people involved too, and with brilliant detail. All of his descriptions feel and seem completely real, not far-fetched or artificial. It's like you are there, you are the fox, you are the predator. You will feel absorbed in the book, through the book. The book, like an open door to the wilderness, will make you feel like you are outside of your 'human' body, and THAT is the craft of an incredible author!)

And to conclude, because this is very important, all of the books that he has written are in current English, not archaic. There is a drop here and there of a word that you may not have heard, but surprisingly, they are all understandable. His books are for young and old alike and will arouse the sleeping 'spirit of the woods' in the deepest recesses of our being.
