Book Description

Red Denver: Prelude to REHO (A Post-Apocalyptic Short Story)

Red Denver, one of several successful communities in Usona, post-Blast America, has thrived because of OldWorld machinery and a strong community government. With his past behind him, REHO has made a new life for himself in Red Denver. Until Soapy, a local crime boss, starts a chain of events that leads to a climatic final face-off between Reho and one of the genetically-modified warbeasts designed by the Hegemons--an alien race determined to see humankind go extinct.

NOW AVAILABLE -- REHO: A Science Fiction Thriller

"REHO is an instant Post-Apocalyptic Classic." Nicholas Sansbury Smith, best-selling author of the ORBS Series

Nuclear war destroyed the OldWorld. But that was just the beginning. During humanity's darkest hour, an ancient alien race struck, waging a two-year war with Earth's survivors. Having lost, humankind scattered, waiting for the day to reclaim their planet.

Reho, a young, survival-hardened man wandering the Blastlands of Usona, searches for redemption as he teams up with a motley merchant crew on their way to deliver OldWorld GPS devices to New Afrika. Haunted by his past, Reho must discover the truth about his own origins while thrown headfirst into a war that will not only alter his future, but the future of all humankind.

4.0 out of 5 stars Post-apocalyptic short story May 19, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
The post-apocalyptic genre is probably my favorite type of books to read and this story based on Reho's adventures in Red Denver is a tantalizing glimpse into the full story of the Hegemon Wars that will be coming (hopefully) soon.

I am looking forward to reading the book and finding out more about Reho's backstory. I also want to find out more about this world of ours that author Denham has demolished and then re-created. I do wish there wasn't such a gap between when this story was published and when the full book is to come out (supposedly to be July 2014 at this time).

4.0 out of 5 stars `Being undefeated had made him enemies.' June 19, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Louisiana author D. L. Denham comes to his debut novel well prepared. He has degrees from Southeastern Louisiana University including a Masters Degree in History, he teaches and he writes. He is a talent developing and a talent to watch.

Denham opens his short story with extraordinary atmosphere. The year is 2083, the place is a prison holding cell where we meet Reho, our main character, who has been captured and accused of murder of one of the subordinates of Soapy, a crime boss and the chief of racing (Reho is not under Soapy's control and has been the consistent winner of races). Raging, Reho is pacified by an old man in the same cell who urges Reho to gain control of his anger management. In a few short pages we traverse the world of crime, heinous fights to the death, the introduction of beasts, a proposed fight for his new friend and mentor etc.

Denham's writing style is raw and cannot really be adequately judged on the basis of a short story. But he writes with conviction and infuses the words with the right tenor to make them credible in an incredible situation/fantasy. He is well worth watching. Grady Harp, June 14

5.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable read. February 10, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I was reminded of the Fallout and Borderlands series. I'm not really into post-apocalyptic stuff, but I know what I like to read, and I enjoyed "Red Denver." It's a well-written short story that works well on its own as well as an introduction to a larger story.

4.0 out of 5 stars Awesome setting for an awesome chracter May 19, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Post apocalyptic novels (with a focus on sci-fi) will always be a favorite of mine, because it allows both futuristic technology, but with a feel of horror and excitement that only comes when society is crumbling. The world building included in this short story delivers on both, so far, and I'm looking forward to what the first actual installment brings.

The second part of the short story that has me looking forward to the first novel is the protagonist. I am also a huge fan of characters that are highly capable, like Reho, from this story. I don't like the every-man protagonists popular in post apocalyptic settings, because the only reasons those types of characters stay alive are gimmicks or tropes like plot armor. On the other hand, it makes sense that a character like Reho would survive, because, frankly, he's bad ass.

I'm giving this story a four star rating because, while there were some great parts, certain things were a bit of a letdown. I wasn't exactly sure what Reho's former girlfriend's stance was on him fighting for his life and I thought the warbeast was pretty lame. I mean, I know Reho is super awesome, but the Hegemon should have just stuck with whatever conventional weaponry they use instead of creating genetically modified life. Because Reho just killed it with a knife. It sounds like it would die just as easily to normal guns as, say, a tiger or lion would. Anyway, I spent a disproportional amount of time on that complain. There were so many more good things than bad things in the short story.

I'm looking forward to seeing more of Reho and the post apocalyptic world outside of Red Denver. The story looks like it has a ton of potential.

4.0 out of 5 stars Oldworld Gasolines What Am I Talking About? May 28, 2014

Format:Kindle Edition
Red Denver by D.L. Denham

I liked this book. The whole time I was reading, I thought back on the Star Wars scene with the racing machines, and also a bit of Mad Max.

Mr. Denham has written a prequel before the story, a bit unusual but it works. The story takes place in a futuristic world with ruthless men who live on the edge of society. Roho, is a bad-boy hero who races Oldworld Gasolines, and fights to make points. He never loses and makes a powerful enemy in Soapy. Roho is considered dangerous and Soapy deals with him in a manner as old as time.

I am anxious to see more of Roho; I related with his character, a man living in an impossible world, doing the best he can. I would recommend Red Denver to readers who like futuristic worlds and Science Fiction.

I was gifted this eBook in return for an honest review.

4.0 out of 5 stars Must Read Novel! July 12, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I love to read. I have red hundreds of novels and short stories. I must say writing short story is a creative art which is not everybody's cup of tea. Long stories and novels are usually interesting because they cover a bigger picture but to make short story interesting is not an easy task. You have to attract the reader within these few pages and you have to make sure that reader must not lose his interest till the end. Red Denver is a kind of story written about year 2083. It is scientific, interesting and beautifully written. I must say please read this novel. You will find it awesome.
