4.0 out of 5 stars Chamberlain's "20th Maine" had a double!, May 4, 1997
By A Customer
This review is from: Red Diamond Regiment: The 17th Maine Infantry, 1862-1865 (Hardcover)
This book is a "sleeper." I would put it just a shelf below Pullen's Civil War classic, "The 20th Maine." The book doesn't just describe heroic battles, but also camplife, life on the march, and politics at unit and state levels. There are many anecdotes both humorous and tragic. Though no single personality shines through as in the 20th, the regiment itself takes on the character of a damned tough Yankee. When you put this book down, you will have a strong affection for the "old sweats" who brought that haunting smile to Lincoln's last photograph. The Union forever
