this is not a flame thrower in the military sense, it is a "garden flame thrower" for weed control, and would make a poor weapon . it has a range of about 8 inches, and is very heavy & clunky. it does, however, allow one to clear weeds quickly. i have a large area covered in gravel, and my flame thrower takes care of the spring weeds with less environmental cost than herbicides. BUT DO NOT USE DURING FIRE SEASON!

At first I was very disappointed, it took forever to burn a weed. I quit and watched some informative Weed Dragon videos on YouTube. Nobody else was having low flow!

Inside the directions was a yellow flyer - IMPORTANT NOTE. The gist of it is if you turn the valve on too fast an "Excess Flow P.O.L." device is triggered that limits flow.

The next time I lit the torch and squeezed the trigger it was like a jet pack - huge rush of flame shot out 10-12 inches. WOW - this thing really does work!

The main reason I bought it is for my gravel driveway. Spraying "RoundUp" chemicals only works 3 months out of the year, when it is above 90-degrees, not windy, and not going to rain for 24 hours. This torch has none of those limitations. Plus the $100 a year I spent on spray is now no longer spent. It cost me $12.81 to fill the tank. I did my driveway in less than an hour and still have half a tank left.

I highly recommend this thing - if you are having trouble with yours be sure you are not a victim of the protective device. Also the funny reviews here about zombie killing and flying off the ground will make perfect sense after you get one of these. It's very impressive!

i use this to take care of fence lines and around bleachers at our ballfields. I bought the backpack unit so it is portable and easy to cover multiple fields without having to drag around a cart. it took me about two time of flaming the fence lines and bleacher areas to get things under control. Just flaming the grass/weeds for a few seconds is all it takes - i figured out it was just a waste of gas to try and evaporate the weeds. this unit makes life a lot easier not having to use a string trimmer as much and it stops grass from growing where you don't want it to. the tank lasted me about 90 minutes or so. the adjustable control is nice. I didn't mind the weight - it wasn't too heavy to walk around with on my back. it is kind of loud when i squeeze the trigger and create a big flame so i recommend using ear protection if you don't want to listen to that. it lights real easy and turns off easy. i like it because it takes care of grass and weeds in rocky areas, and stops grass from growing in-between the chain-link fences. It still requires work, but it does a good job.

It takes me 1/4 the time as chemicals and only 9 bucks to fill the tank. I am able to do everything I used to with chemicals and 2 fence lines on one tank.

Bonus: Awesome bonfire starter... neighbors all want one now.

As stated in other reviews, burning weeds may not perminantly keep the weeds from coming back. For my use, that is acceptable as I am trying to clear a fense line without chemicals as the horse may eat the grass and get sick if Roundup is used.

On the pro side, it produces alot of heat. There is no need to scorch the ground where the plan is. Once it wilts, it will die in the next few yours. This tourch produces more heat than is needed to do the job.

On the con side, it is hard to keep a 400,000 btu flame for large jobs that take more than a few minutes. The problem is that so much gas is being removed from the tank so quickly that the tank becomes cold. As it cools, pressure reduces. I never had the flame go out but the heat produced is drastically reduced. Yesterday, it was about 75 degrees out and the dew point was near 75 as well. After 10 minutes of use, the tank was sweating hard as it was colder than the dew point. As I kept using it, the flame dropped, the tank cooled more and I had a layer of ice in the tank that was pretty significant. I let the tank rest about 30 min or so. When I reused the tource, the flame was almost back to normal.

Improvements: It would be nice to have control on how much BTU power you pull from the device. Maybe modify the handle or add a jet to get 50,000, 100,000, and 200,000 btu settings. I bet if you can make this adjustment, tank cooling would not be as big an issue and you could maintain a consistant flame longer.

The first time I started this flame thrower the weeds on my driveway migrated into the the shelter of a nearby stump, cowering for their vegetative lives. A tongue of flame three feet long torches, or rather parboils, the weeds dead. Don't think you have to actually create an inferno of small weed fires, it only takes a few seconds to wilt the weeds and they simply die.

The unit is easy to assemble. Be sure you buy the trigger valve. The backpack version is convenient if you plan to torch a large area or long walk. One hint: Start the pressure from the tank with a very small opening as the unit has a safety valve to protect the world from a run away situation, like you break off the control valve, and it will shut down the pressure. A few minutes on a low flow setting and you can open the valve more after the pressure in the hose is equalized. Actually, you don't really need to open the valve more as, by that time, you will have already enjoyed the primordial joy of torching your target with a blast of your flaming ray gun....

BTW - Customer service is excellent. They answered the phone promptly and you are talking to a technician.

BTW(2) - It also does a good job of eliminating black slim mold on your stone walks. You simply heat the rock very hot and the moss is toast and begins to decay away. It actually works better than a pressure washer as the moss/mold/slime's roots are also vaporized and, thus, does not grow back nearly as fast.
