Early Red Dwarf, August 22, 2000
This review is from: Red Dwarf - Series 1, Byte 2: Waiting For God [VHS] (VHS Tape)
Here's second part of the first season of the wonderful series Red Dwarf. The first season is essential viewing for any fans of Red Dwarf who want to experience the run of the show. Objectively, these episodes are not as good as the following seasons. The character development is just beginning and the story lines run a bit slower. By the second season the actors are off and running, here they are just testing their space legs. Confidence and Paranoia is the best episode featured on this tape. Two aspects of Lister's psychological makeup are personified and brought to life by a strange space virus. Lister becomes great pals with his Confidence (who wouldn't love a friend who genuinely believed you were the King, Mr. Wonderful, the Duke of Deliciousness?), and avoids the irritating git that is his Paranoia. Never has an episode focused on the Cat as much as Waiting for God. Truthfully, I think the Cat is best on the sidelines. This episode is slow, but definitely contains important Red Dwarf history. Rimmer's obsession with a strange pod is priceless. Me Squared is Rimmer versus Rimmer. An interesting look into Rimmer's depths of self-hatred. Follows the same principles as Confidence and Paranoia, perhaps there are aspects of eveyone's personality to which one should never be introduced. There's a little too much shouting and dramatic pause in this episode for my taste. The script is not as quick-witted as later Red Dwarf episodes. There are moments of gold in these episodes that should not be missed by any Red Dwarf fan. By the time the second season rolls around, Red Dwarf obtains the status of pure genius. This tape provides a glimpse of genius in the making.

Boyz from the Dwarf!!!, April 8, 2003
This review is from: Red Dwarf - Series 1, Byte 2: Waiting For God [VHS] (VHS Tape)
This is an ideal place to start if you're interested in becoming a member of the crew. I would suggest getting the DVD instead. If you don't have a DVD player yet this series is a good enough reason as any to make that happen. Despite the series still being in it's infancy and the set still stuck in "low-budget mode" this tape has a lot to offer in the way of comedy where the first tape of the series merely sets up the characters. The first episode is "Confidence & Paranoia" - which features a virus that takes on physical form in the projection of Dave Lister's Confidence and Paranoia. There are some very funny moments in the episode. The second episode is "Waiting for God" - a very entertaining look into the workings of religious dogma and the various reasons things may come about the way they do. This episode gives us a great look into the origin of Cat and spends time developing the character. We also find out why he's so dumb. His father "ate his own feet" and Cat merely responds with "Well... I did wonder." The third episode is "Me2" - this is quite a treasure for all you out there who get a kick out of Rimmer. You'll be in good company as Rimmer (a hologram) tricks Lister into projecting a duplicate hologram of himself. At first it works out for Rimmer but eventually only leaves this world class narcissist hating himself in the end. Some of the antics between the two Rimmers are quite hilarious.
