The Worlds Premier Sci-Fi Comedy is here!!!!!,
By Jeff X (Addieville, IL United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Red Dwarf: Series I and II (DVD)
...and its about time. Join the crew of the Red Dwarf, as ship screwball and slacker Dave Lister is put in stasis as punishment for bringing an unquarantined, pregnant cat on board the ship. When he wakes up from stasis, he finds that 3 million years have passed, and he is the last member of the human race!!! Join him in his wacky adventures alongside "Holly" (the ships computer), Arnold J. Rimmer(a holographic representation of his deceased bunkmate), and "Cat" ( a humanoid who has 'evolved' from his cat). Seasons 1 and 2 are available Feb 25th 2003, and two seasons will be released every ensuing February until all eight seasons have been released. This is the funniest television program ever made in my opinion, and I am sure you will enjoy it!!!

Just got these the other day. And of course I couldn't sleep until I had watched them both... with commentary turned on of course. The picture and sound are excellent. The commentary (by the whole cast no less) is great. They chit chat about the history, what was going on when things were filmed, odd things they remember, etc. Very enjoyable and quite humorous for the Red Dwarf fan. Lots of other interesting extras to explore on the DVD as well. All in all it is a very nicely done DVD. If you are a RD fan, you have no choice but to go buy it. Ace would approve. :-) My only complaint is that they are only going to release two seasons every year. The wait for the next ones are going to kill me. Smoke me a kipper, I'll be back for breakfast.

Wonderful for homesick Brits!,

This review is from: Red Dwarf: Series I and II (DVD)
I am English and was 16 when the first series of Red Dwarf came out. I think my Dad and I watched every single episode of every series. Now that I live in America I tend to get homesick sometimes. So I go through phases of watching any English comedies I can get my hands on - Blackadder, Ab Fab, French & Saunders, Last of the Summer Wine, Jeeves & Wooster (although I draw the line at Are you Being Served. I hated that program and I am not going to change my mind now!). I came really close to buying Red Dwarf on VHS last year (was getting desperate!) but then I found out they were finally releasing it on DVD so I am really glad I waited. If you've never heard of Red Dwarf but you like the comedy of Blackadder and Ab Fab, give it a try - I don't think you will be dissapointed.

Great for Red Dwarf Fans,

The commentaries are hilarious, although sometimes hard to understand. (There is no closed captioning for the cast's comments.) There is, however, closed captioning for the regular episodes, which I really appreciate. Sometimes the studio audience is laughing so hard, you can't understand what the characters are saying. If you have seen the Smeg-Ups or Smeg-Out tapes, you have already seen the outtakes that are on the DVD. The booklets in the DVD's are not very detailed, just some info on what to look for in each episode. I would have liked more background material. They also should have provided cast bios on the DVD. The picture quality is excellent. A must buy for any Red Dwarf Fan.

Great to have the series finally starting to come out on DVD, along with the many extras included. The biggest disappointment for me (and probably some other fans) is that none of the "extra features" material is closed-captioned or subtitled in English. This is rather a surprise, as most of the BBC/Warner releases in the past two years have been fully subtitled in English for the hearing-impaired. This one wasn't, and thus makes it essential to keep the VHS commercial releases of the Smeg-Ups tapes, as none of the out-takes are subtitled on the DVD releases.Maybe next time they will do a better job on this end. Hope so.

Smeg-tastic,

I am a Brit living in USA and was very happy to hear about the US release of the DVDs. I have both series and have not laughed so much in ages. My trusty old Red Dwarf Videos are wearing out from so much use and so the DVD's couldn't come at a better time. By far the best thing is the commentary from the 4 main cast members. They clearly haven't watched the episodes in years and are obviously having a lot of fun remembering what went on at the time. I'm not sure that all Americans will understand some of the words they use (some of them are very London based colloquialisms) but I understood them and enjoyed each episode with the commentary. I haven't laughed so much in ages. It's simply SMEGTASTIC.

One of the funniest shows on TV...,
By
This review is from: Red Dwarf: Series I and II (DVD)
To be honest, when compared to other shows on TV, this IS not just the funniest show on TV it IS THE FUNNY SHOW (if that makes any sense). Meet Dave Lister, sole survivor of a radiation leak caused by Rimmer, who is now a dead hologram and not very happy about it. Add Holly, Red Dwarf's not-very-smart computer and the fashion conscious Cat, a creature who is the final product of three million years of evolution from the ship's cat, and you get a VERY weird show. On top of that add the breaking of light speed, chef's exams, mutated space creatures, unidentified space pods, a cleaning android and memory replacement. Red Dwarf is proof that there is a God. Dave Lister of course!

Red Dwarf = Entertainment,

I've been watching Red Dwarf since my Grandfather brought it to my attention on PBS several years back. I didn't think much of it then, but as I grew older and more mature (probably smarter too) I caught in on PBS again........different part of the U.S. this time. I believe it was somewhere around season 6 the second time........close to the same as before I think. Upon watching it I was drawn to the witty comments and true to science fiction atmosphere.......it had me in tears. When season six ended........all Dwarfers know the long awaited end to that season.....they picked up at the beggining with season one. At first I was very dissapointed, wanting to see what happened to the crew and all. However I noticed the change in the set....or special effects.....I was drawn to the story. I wanted to see where these lunatics where spawned. I watched all the way back up to season 6 again and still the cliffhanger. Luckily not too long after that they where released on Video.....I was elated. I purchased all that where available........and eventually the long awaited season 7.....then 8. Now I'm waiting for the movie to be finnished and released.....check out the fan club for more info. To make a long story short...season one and season two may not have the effects or the financing...however with a keen wit or intellect you'll find the jokes are just as funny. Once you work your way through the complete seasons.....and I mean all of them, you'll be glad you did. I just wish they could make them as fast as I can watch them. Its awesome that they are being released on DVD, I will wait to purchase them when all of them are released as a box set......and you know they will. If you have never heard of Red Dwarf (especially in the States) and you like LEXX......or british commedy then get Red Dwarf. Your life won't be complete without it.Smoke me a kipper, I'll be back for breakfast!

Purists Rejoice!,
This review is from: Red Dwarf: Series I and II (DVD)
Thank-you, BBC, for giving us these episodes untouched! For those of you who, like me, cringed at the extra special effects added to the original series, this is a treasure! These episodes are the ones we enjoyed watching on PBS when they first made their way across the pond: original 80's mega-ecstasy bliss! I didn't even think these gems were available anymore, but I thank those responsible for recognizing their value . For extra fun, the Japanese version of "The End" is featured in Series One - complete with all the added special effects & new theme music. Great for comparison!

Too Many Extras........Not enough Episodes,
This review is from: Red Dwarf: Series I and II (DVD)
I love the show and have enjoyed watching it. However this page does not list how many episodes are on each series, there are only 6 in each. Although I probably should have investigated them individually I was really exited about the prospect of getting 2 full seasons (atleast from an American viewpoint) and when they arrived they were packaged together with the fronts facing out opposite each other, needless to say once I got the package opened and scanned the backs I realized I only had 12 episodes total on two discs, the other two are full of extras. At discovering this I wanted to return them but could not because I had to open the package to find out that there were only 6 episodes to a series. I have since discovered that they sell a copy of Just the Episodes that have Series 1,2,3,and 4, which I would have bought had I seen it before I had purchased this product.
