5.0 out of 5 stars Discovery..., August 6, 2004

Pippin62 "critique at will" (Marlow, Ok United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Red (Audio CD)
I have never seen an episode of Dawson's Creek or any of the other shows mentioned on the CD wrapper, I have seen "All I Want", an idependant film staring Elijah Wood. Two of Evan Olson's songs ('Not What I Wanted' and 'Ticking Away'), are on the soundtrack. I love all the music in the film but Evan Olsons's stood out so I went in search of his music and found "RED". I felt like Garfield eating lasagne for the first time...had I died and gone to heaven?
I have a wide range in musical taste and this music satisfies my audio palate. It has what I would call an "up-to-the-minute-Retro" feel to it. It's fresh and new but with '70's pop and rock influences.
I am appalled that I had let Mr. Olson's music slip past me for so long. I amend my ways though. I am a new fan!
As Admiral Byrd might have said when he flew over the North Pole "This is so cool!"

5.0 out of 5 stars Champagne Pop, October 13, 2002
By
This review is from: Red (Audio CD)
Evan Olson's CD "Red" is sparkling pop, as effervescent as champagne. The CD may be titled "Red," but its cover is blue while the music pulses with energy & imagination. With 20 songs on the CD, it's an ambitious effort. Five of the songs are my favorites. The opener "I Can't Forget" is a bubbly pop tune with insurgent guitars, "Time moving like a river, I watch the sun rise in your eyes." "Love, stranger than a freight train rolling down the tracks across my heart; You, more beautiful than love, I knew that I was in it from the start," Evan sings in a high voice with a chorus of background vocals on the upbeat tune "Beautiful World." "Settled" is a gorgeous pop tune with high vocals that float cloudlike over the strum of guitars. "Burn Me Down" rocks hard with an upbeat melody, "Bad days come & bad days go then everything's just fine." My very favorite is "Silly Grin" with a pulsing bass line that would have been comfortable on the "Bus Stop" CDs. There are no weak tracks on this CD. Olson's music is happy, energetic pop that's fun to listen to again & again. Enjoy!

4.0 out of 5 stars Give this guy a chance....., September 22, 2002

A lot of music here... Evan writes some extraordinary songs, and has a lot of instrumental talent as well. Although the CD is a little on the "pop" side, the breadth of his talent shines through. Buy this!

5.0 out of 5 stars Good Stuff Guys--Give Evan A Chance!, September 11, 2002
This review is from: Red (Audio CD)
Evan has loaded up his third album with 21 really good pop songs!
I am well aware of Evan's musical past and I do think he's softened up a bit from the days as the Majosha frontman. Layin' down the funk! And then he moved on to Bus Stop (a solid rock band) as the lead vocalist/rhythm guitarist.
And since he went solo he cleaned up his sound, softened it up a bit and is now gearing it up for pop radio. Not a bad thing. Just another step in Evan's musical evolution.
My point being--check this record out. It's good. It's contents contain, arguably, Evan's two best songs: "I Can't Forget," and "Not What I Wanted."
Listen and enjoy.
