AN EXCELLENT GAME THAT WENT MOSTLY UNNOTICED!!!,

RED FACTION is a 2001 FPS game that packed so much innovation and so many great ideas that is still considered a gaming milestone.
This is the FIRST game to feature effective interactive environments. Not only can your firing or explosives do actual damage, often it was essential to do so (in order to gain passage through a wall or destroy a bridge). The graphics will seem a bit dated today of course, yet, on the bright side, will truly shine even on less powerful systems. And, if truth be told, a number of the latest shooters relay too much on their graphics and not enough on their overall gaming experience. The level design is exemplary; the guns are numerous and really balanced and the gameplay is really intuitive and enjoyable. Give it a try. I am sure you will like it too! Note that there has also been a sequel, RED FACTION 2, which unfortunately, did NOT share this game's virtues. For the original RED FACTION though: HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!

I bought this game recently, and it is great, one of the best 1st person shooters I've ever played. It has a challenge to it but not one that is impossible to beat. It also has an incredible multiplayer, and there is ALWAYS someone on to play against. There is also a wide variety of weapons to choose from, from guns to launchers. This is a great game, and well worth the [money] it's going for now. I highly recomend this game.

I'm not into most games, where you have to figure a bunch of stuff out. Yet; this is different and fun. The graphics and story are great, and there are many hidden treasures! I think you'll luv this game!

...and REALLY ENJOYING IT!!! This game is dated, to say the least... from top to bottom. But, it takes me back to why I love first-person-shooters in the first place. You know the story... lots of enemy soldiers, 'bosses' here and there, critters galore, trucks to drive and run over troops, submarines with neat torpedoes (!), lots of gun-play. Graphics are dated too, of course, but who cares! Sometimes kinda hard... don't spend all your ammo in one spot: you'll be sorry. I don't know why I've never heard of this game - but glad I finally did (for under $10 - really hard to beat). Seems like it came out about the time of HalfLife... 2001. Anyhow, it's fun... plain and simple. Recommend... but don't even think about comparing it to 'today's FPSs. Chill out and enjoy it. I am.

If only games progressed where this left off.. Too much eye candy, with little or no innovation are what today's FPS games are.
I've never to date EVER had a more realistic feel from weapons in a video game than with Red Faction. Geo-mod engine was the best.. Yes, the graphics at that time were a tad bit less visual, less attractive than other games of that time, but it was so worth it. Blast away! Blast a tunnel or a fox hole open with your explosive weapons! Use the torpedo of the minisub to create a cave! Just messing around was a blast (no pun intended), and then there was the actual game itself which was great. What a real treat it was to play this game back in the day.. It seems the way today's games are going..we'll never see another truly destructible environment like Red Faction offered. Hope I'm wrong..and soon too.

i had alot of trouble with this game... it wouldn't work on either of my suped up gaming camputers... so i had to use a computer that had a terrible processor!
looking past that... the game was kinda good. gameplay: it's like most FPS's... easy to get used to it... and i like that there's an extremely large amount of weapons that you can use... i mean, alot of the time i was like where did that come from' :) graphics: for a game that was made like 10 or more years ago... they were pretty good. story: for an FPS the story was rather slow... i mean, i LOVE timeshift (see my review for timeshift)... and this game got to it! but it just didn't draw me in... music: it's your ordinary backround music... nothing specal... replay value: it's really terrible... the game kept crashing and it had alot of glitches... maybe it was my computer... but i still didn't like it! this was a good game.... but i was expecting more. if your gonna get it.... make sure not to have extremely high expectations. P.S. i actually got this because i wanted to get Red Faction Geurilla... but i wanted the whole story first... before i got the newest one.... and even though this one kinda sucks... i'm still gonna get RFG... it looks awesome!!!

Red Faction retrospective,

The great thing about getting computer games years after their release is that they're dirt cheap and they run flawlessly on your computer. Red Faction is a game held in high esteem by first-person shooter fans from 2000. You play as a miner on Mars in the future who is suddenly thrust into a revolt against a conspiring corporation that has been abusing them.
What really makes the game unique is the GeoMod engine, which lets you create holes in the rocky walls and floors that compose the game world. It really is a small touch that makes a big difference. I only wish there were more uses for it in the single-player campaign. There's this one point in the game where you get a giant drilling tank, and I wanted to see more of them throughout the game. The single player campaign is admittedly short, lasting about 7 or so hours counting the time that the game doesn't track because you died and had to reload a save point. However, seeing as you can pick this game up for only a few dollars these days, who cares how long it is? The real short-coming of this game is that you get to a point in the game where a weapon is introduced that always kills you in a single shot, and the enemies are fairly good at aiming with it. They give this gun to so many enemies that the latter half of the game can be frustrating at times, especially when you turn a corner only to be killed by an enemy you would have had no idea was there. In spite of those two complaints, whether or not the game was worth the full retail price back in 2000, it's well worth a few dollars these days, and the multiplayer community is still active online, so you have nothing to lose by picking the game up.

I got this game, like I'm sure many others have, for the Geomod system. The idea of blasting through a wall seems like so much fun, and it is. Multiplayer is easy to join and has more than enough people to play with. Cheater (using mods) are a rare sight on the game, though they do come by from time to time.
I found single player to be a big disapointment. Just your basic "go here and shoot that", not bad, but with the Geomod it could have been so much better. If you don't plan to play multiplayer, this game proboly isn't worthi t. But for multiplayer, best game I have ever palyed.

This game is great. If you like games like Half-Life you will like RED FACTION. It's a long game and has a pretty decent story line to suck you in.Computer requirements aren't too bad either. I ran the game with a low end video card. you get lots of saves if you like to save a lot.AI characters are okay. The very end of the game will have you cursing or loving the last 10 seconds of gameplay. This is a must have game.

Red Faction is a great multiplayer game that doesnt require a tip-top computor to run. The single player is great, but in my oppinion it really shines in multiplayer. There are plenty of maps and plenty of weapons to play with
