Win2k Users Beware!,
By A Customer
This review is from: Red Faction (CD-ROM)
Before I get flammed, I should say that I played this game on Win98 first and was blown away. Very cool graphics, gameplay is nice too. But my main problem with the game is that it does not support Win2k or WinXP. How stupid is that? Especially in light of the fact that it was released in September right before WinXP was released. Apparently, the company (THQ) is not concerned about the market of new computer buyers. Which most new computers will be pre-loaded with. I feel that I must warn any gamer thinking they can buy this game and make it run on Win2k or WinXP. If you go to the THQ forum and look at the number of post about this, you will see that it is a major problem. You will see numerous posts of how people have had to tweak there machine settings all different ways just to get the game to run for an hour or so before it crashes. No one should have to modify their machine settings to such an extent to get any game to run! I strongly warn any gamer with Win2k or Xp to not buy this game! Win98 and Win95 users have fun, Win2k and WinXP users play with something else like Unreal Tournament, which is now 2 years old but runs on Win2K. If anyone cares, I am running a 667 Pentium III, 256 MEG of RAM with a VisionTek GeForce 3 video card and SoundBlaster Live X-Gamer sound card.

Cool game, a bit overrated but worth paying...,

Nice game, but nothing very special except the Geo-Mod engine that let's you GO YOUR WAY! In fact probably the best thing in the game. The gameplay is fun but not as addicting (for me)as let's say Unreal Tournament or Deus Ex. The overall look of maps (actually map, because of early demo) is good, textures a nice too. Speaking of weapons, they're somewhat regular to FPS games. The collision detection is quiet good and only occasionally you'll see the arm of a dead body going through a wall but they'll probably fix it in a next patch. For some reason however, models are really low on polygons. Probably under a thousand, and Unreal Tournament modeals look much better. The facial animation on the models is the other thing. Facial animation is good and looks very realistic. The system requirements aren't all that high for today's games. In fact RF run water smooth on my PIII with 128 megs of RAM and 32 meg GeForce 2 GTS with everything to the max and 1024x768 screen resolution (max resolution of my monitor). Anyway, if you changed your mind about buying this game after reading my review then just forget about it. It's a good game that's definitely worth buying so, go on and buy it! (or preorder...) Here's how I would rate it on a 10 point scale: Graphics: 7 Sound: 9 Controls: 8 Gameplay: 8 -- Overall: 8

So Much Potential,
By Robbie (Georgia) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Red Faction (CD-ROM)
Well, first let me tell you that I have been waiting for Red Faction ever since I heard about it six months ago. The ability to punch holes through anything? A submarine and plane [flying machine... whatever]? And a good story? Well, needless to say I was engaged, as nearly every FPS fan was. But the Red Faction they promised is very different from what they released. Sure, Geo-Mod technology lives up to the hype, except you can use it almost nowhere. And the engine is complete trash. I almost died from laughter watching guys run around [their legs look like a cheap cartoon that is missing a couple of animations] and speaking [the mouth animation is worse than Half-Life]. And the vehicles are nice, but you hardly get any [the submarines are very cool though]. If this game had been released with the Q3TA engine [Quake III: Team Arena] with the Geo-Mod tech tied in, it would have been a winner. Now it is just a game to play for a couple hours, not really a Half-Life killer or a legend. If this game had had a bit more polish, it would have been the best.-Robbie

Short,
This review is from: Red Faction (CD-ROM)
I am a veteran FPS gamer and I found this game to be very, very short. It is not particularly challenging to defeat. The replayability factor was low, as the enemies were in exactly the same positions as the previous time. In a technical sense, it was well constructed, without any bugs. The GEO mod engine was very good, but under utilised as a gaming option. I managed to start and finish this game in a single session, of about 5 hours, and when compared to some games that released even within the last 2 years, that is poor.In summary, technically well constructed, short game play, middling story line. 3 stars.

The Demo Rocks-- The Game Should Too,
By Marrcus Beattie (Saint Petersburg, Florida United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Red Faction (CD-ROM)
I've played the demo and i have to say as a long time Quake player and then Half Lfe.. this game blew me away. The best part is that opnce you hav the rocket launcher you don't need doors any more... The completely destructable world allows you to even see NME's on a heat scope and just launch a rocket through the wall.Plus the completely destuctable world works in Muliti-player... my favorite feature.. Now I don't have only one or two ways to escape.. I can make my own doors.. If the demo is any indication this will be a contender for Game Of The Year quick.. Grab the Demo .... Trust me you'll buy the game

Half-Life in a shiny new wrapper,
By
This review is from: Red Faction (CD-ROM)
I give it 4 stars because it was at least done fairly well. However, except for the vehicles (nice touch), one fairly interesting new weapon, and the ability to blow holes it walls (a "feature" I never actually NEEDED) it doesn't really offer anything Half-Life didn't. Actually, the Half-Life storyline intrigued me vastly more. Heck, the ending of Red Faction is even a little sad compared to HL. However, that being said, it did give me my FPS fix for about 10 hours and it did it fairly well. I recommend buying it, but just barely. Wait until you are completely tired of Counter-Strike and need a little alone time. Also, a word to the wise: don't depend on the quicksave feature. There is no autosave in the game, so every time you hit that F6 key to save you are overwriting the previous save. Exit to the main menu occasionally and perform a manual save. You won't be sorry. -K

wow,.......wow, this game will change it all. the Geo-mod tech used that allows for instant level/map redefination rocks! I'm also on a MOD dev team and i can tell you that when this hits stores it will be the first thing on our list. If you havent heard about this game yet,... well not too suprising, the main things that will set this game apart are the tech aspects not the story-line. The Geo-mod engine allows the user(player) to modify the aspects of the level at will. this means that when you shoot a rocket at a door it blows a hole in it not just leaves a black scorch mark. A MUST HAVE for any Hal-life Fans!!!!!!!

I tried the demo of the single player and multiplayer. What a game! I am a big fan of Half-Life and Unreal and this game is right up there. The "geo-mod" stuff is a great addition, but I really like the smooth graphics and a nice story line. I can't wait to get the full version. If you like FPS games, YOU REALLY NEED TO GET THIS GAME!

Extremely cool game,
By A Customer
This review is from: Red Faction (CD-ROM)
I bought this game on the PS2 in anticipation of the PC version coming out. It is cool but Im just not gonna call it next gen or anything. The way things can be destroyed is cool, dont get me wrong but it isnt quite as revolutionary as it was made out to be. I must say the coolest thing is the way the glass shatters, its just soooo cool looking. But getting past the hype I found this to be a really fun title. The Death Matchs will be fun with bits of wall blowing up everywhere. Not too sure if my disliking of the games over-glorified luster is probably because the PS2 making the graphics look really blurry and the controls are just disgusting (if u are used to playing PC shooters that is). Just let me say that if you are lookin to get one good PC game this July, get Max Payne. It looks so unbelievable that it is mindboggling thinking how it will play. For those of you who are like me and just like buying up all the new titles, or someone looking for a good solid game with a fun story line and nice multiplayer possibilities then give this game a try. I cant wait to get my PC version and see it on my 3D ProphetIII, rid myself of that analog controller and get my Razer Boomslang mouse. Happy gaming :D

Really Great FPS ( First Person Shooter ),
By Mark Reynolds (Bethel, CT United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Red Faction (CD-ROM)
Red Faction is 1 of the best fps of 2001. It has an exciting story that gets you hooked. It has tons of fun wepons for all your fragging needs. THis game has a exciting new game engine called GEO-MOD tech which basicly means that u can blow up the environment. Some fun things you could do with this is make a foxhole, blow holes in walls to get to secret areas, or even blow up a bridge to stop movimg tanks or forces in their tracks! This game is very good at lighting and visual effects too. This game has many fun and exciting secrets and mysteries to find. Just for a little tidbit the funniest thing i saw was lighting bots in multiplayer on fire with flamethrowers! They run around screaming like little girls until u see their burning corpse drop to the floor!!! I would recemend this game to anyone who enjoys action/adventure, first person shooters, or just blowing stuff to oblivion!!! :)
