Editorial Reviews

Residing somewhere between Black Flag and Black Sabbath, Red Fang recall a time when rock was more urgent and a little horrifying. Synthesizing a variety of heavy music influences and their own distinct musical identity, the band can easily shift from barn-burning punk to mid-tempo, hyperdistorted bass destruction all while maintaining a cohesive sound. Red Fang create gigantic rock songs that are easy to listen to (not easy listening, mind you) and qualifies the simultaneous usage of both the thinking and the banging head, which are usually mutually exclusive.

This album rules- anyone who loves the Sword or something in that vain will be very pleasantly surprised by this up and coming Portland, OR band. The record is well-produced but not too slick to betray a sense of the raw power of the songs. Great riffs, great hooks, solid rock all the way!

Mastodon, Black Sabbath, with a hint of Queens of the Stone Age. This is a great rockin album, kind of a less serious funner version of Mastodon. Sorry to compare to other bands cause they really are there own unique sound.

A week after our daughter was born I had to head out with a friend to do some physical work at his place... I mention this because of how tired I was when I got into my car to drive to my friend's place... I decided to take Red Fang with me as I not only not had the chance to listen to it since receiving it in the mail from Amazon the day before, but forgot what they sounded like when I clicked on 'Listen to Samples' prior to purchasing it...

No need to stop for a coffee! Man, was I blown away with how heavy and how awesome the music was... Shades of Melvins... Shades of Fu Manchu... Red Fang is just the panacea one needs to start a day of physical labour off right...

Chapeau!

This was a band i checked out for no other reason than the band name sounded cool, and so i checked out a sampling of their tunes here on Amazon. What i found was a band after my own heart. Very much in the vein of bands like QOTSA, Fu Manchu, and the like, but a bit heavier overall. This is definitely some good driving music that can also be enjoyed while chilling at home, toiling away at work, or pretty much any other setting. I really, really love this album and am glad to have run across it. I have to thank Amazon also...if it hadnt shown up in my recommendations, i probably would never have heard of them, but the fact that it did made it possible to become one of my favorites. So thank you Amazon for that one, and....

Enjoy!

I don't get behind many new bands as I'm getting older, but I really like this band and this album. I stumbled across their video for Prehistoric Dog and was hooked. I really like the guitar sound on this album as it's low and heavy but still articulate. You can hear the bass, rhythm, and lead parts really well. They also make good use of melody as even though the music is aggressivly heavy, it still has an almost poppy melodic quality. I enjoy that a lot, I don't really dig bands that are all dissonance 24/7. It sounds like heavy music for people who like to listen to music, if that makes sense. I classify this band as heavy rock, not metal, not stoner rock, but just balls out heavy.

peace

A freind of mine played the music video for Prehistoric Dog and I just loved it, its like a classic heavy metal sound with a faster tempo. They have a mixture of sounds borrowed from many eras of Heavy Metal, Punk and just a hint of grunge. The best way I can describe this band is Black Sabbath forged with Punk Rock.

I purchesed the CD the next morning with a mission, placed it in my car stereo and was very pleased with this record. Its not often that I get pumped up about modern heavy metals bands, none to me bring anything new to the table.

This record is about rocking out and nothing too techincal and I recomend it highly.

I'm a Kyuss fan from way back, and these guys do provide something in that ballpark. They have an authentic, blues-based heavy sound. If you like thrash you won't want to bother with this. There is a lot of "rhytmical meandering" typical of the Stoner-Rock genre.

I'd prefer they had better production value, although I realize that's part of their presentation. You have to turn it up pretty loud to get the effect I'm looking for, and when you do the bass kind of overwhelms everything else. Of course, that's not such a bad thing.

4 stars, and I'll be checking out their newer release...

This album is very unique and engaging. My 63 year old dad usually doesn't listen to the Heavy Metal genre, but we both love every song on this album. By listening to this album, we have forged a bond. The length is just right, too. The album finishes at just under 40 minutes. Each track is unique in its own way, drawing inspiration from various genres such as blues, "outlaw rock" (with riffs reminiscent to those of ZZ Top's music), gothic rock, etc. I look forward to hearing more from Red Fang!
